Whats real and whats not?

After seeing a discussion on LD on facebook 3 or 4 days ago i have been researching it in detail as i am quite interested. Of course i found credible information mixed with down right crazy information and want to know whats real and whats not about LD. Obviously it can be established that lucid dreaming is possible by anyone but which of these claims can be believed/rubbished?

- i read its possible to get over fears such as heights
- i read that its possible to increase motory skills to the extent of learning from scratch how to drive a car
- that its possible and just as effective to practice sports while lucid dreaming
- from a published book it claimed that a student experienced in LD tried an experiment with his female friend, where she asked him to locate her scar while LD and led him to believe it was on her left side of her back, in his lucid dream he was able to discover it was in a different spot proving that the image of her wasn't just his perception but what she was in real life. Although it stated different experiments failed, maybe because these two were more emotionally connected.

-I read somewhere Robert Monroe claimed he had LD'D for 100years at a time over 2 hours in real life time
- i read that in an experiment one student picked out an image, and while sleeping they constantly thought of that image, and a group of other students had to try pick up the signal and say the image, while one student dreamt about trees which is what it was.

- The ability to process 1million worlds per minute, ok this one sounded quite cool but surely can't happen. The article claimed it was possible to have a machine basically flash a million words in front of your eyes in a minute(in real life) and this would work similar to subliminal advertising and you would remember nothing, however you could then lucid dream and say if it was a one miillion word book, you could then talk to the author in your dream and they could answer any question that has been covered in what has been flashed to you.

-shared dreaming? i have done a bit of reading and a lot of people seem to think its possible/say they've done it, obviously it one of those things most people are unlikely to believe unless they experience it themselves. im no different. But whats your view?

Thanks if you managed to read all that, I just want to know what of that is bullsh%$ and what is possible/how possible is it

I suggest that you ask the question of the state itself. Use each one to enter the state with. Face it, if you want bullshit, ask anyone and you just might end up over your head in it. But, by asking in the state, you might learn more than you expected.

Lucid dreams are what you make them and the experiences you have in them are as real as anything else in waking life, because you're still feeling/seeing/hearing/smelling/tasting it, therefore you can get over fears with them, among thousands of other possibilities.
- i read that its possible to increase motory skills to the extent of learning from scratch how to drive a car Same as above: Your lucid experiences are every bit as real as waking life, therefore you can learn from those experiences.
- that its possible and just as effective to practice sports while lucid dreaming Same as the above two, though your lucid dreams may not provide you with significant levels of AI for your opponents, therefore limiting your learning to practicing moves, as opposed to practicing against tough/intelligent/innovative teams.

I'll get to that at the bottom.

-I read somewhere Robert Monroe claimed he had LD'D for 100years at a time over 2 hours in real life time Time perception has been proven by Dr. Stephen LaBerge in his book "Lucid Dreaming" to be relatively close to real time, but since it's a dream, anyone can claim they felt they were in it for some amount of time. I personally don't believe it was possible for him to have had a lucid for 100 years, seeing as the human mind has processing speed limits, and you have to keep in mind that he was talking about having a dream that felt to last 36,500 days. One year is only 365, can you imagine having a dream that felt THAT long? It's incredibly unlikely - I say he wanted attention. :P

To the extent we've discovered details regarding lucid dreams, it's nothing more than being aware that you're in a dream. Don't get caught up in such sensationalist claims - some people will claim anything because some people will believe anything. :)

But whats your view? My opinion on shared dreaming won't produce conclusive results for you in terms of shaping your belief. The closest I've ever had to a mutual dream (though I've tried it a little more recently) was one experience where my girlfriend and I woke up and called each other to tell one another we'd had a very short conversation in a dream, which we each confirmed we'd had. (She had said that I was the toughest man in the world, to which I thanked her and kissed her cheek. In my dream, she said to someone I was the toughest man in the world, to which I thanked her and kissed her on what I believed to be her arm, but my eyes were closed so I couldn't discern one from the other.) Loaf, WakingNomad, Raven Knight, and MoSH have all reported (among a host of others around DV) to have had shared dreams with others. Talk to them about it, you may need to try it for yourself. I'm still working on it. Like I said, you're right - it's one of those things you have to try for yourself, or believe it through blind faith.

Stephen LaBerge and one other person conducted tests to confirm if OBE's were real, but LaBerge concluded that while he couldn't actually say they're NOT real, he could say that he believed OBE's to be incorrectly-perceived lucid dreams.
