That would be my ultimate goal. To simply recognize the ambience every time I fall asleep. I've only done it a couple of times so far, but I believe that's the most advanced form of attaining lucidity, that everyone should be aspiring to.

But maybe this "feeling" comes from subconsciously knowing that you're not in real life. And that by getting closer to your SC makes it easier to access the feeling... or something :P. Or maybe it comes from the lack of external input or what it's called (using your real eyes to see). Or perhaps from sensing your real body in bed at the same time as you're sensing your dream body. I don't know but it's an interesting subject.
I don't really think it's due to any of those things. :P It can't be from just subconsciously knowing you're not in real life, because even when you're lucid (conscious) the feeling is still there. It's that hazy feeling, you know, where everything is static, yet somehow... not. Objects change shape right in front of you, but you're not completely sure what the transition was like. Know what I mean?
Whether or not there's external input, IMO, depends on your beliefs regarding whether dreams are fabricated by your mind, or simply seen by it.
