      Dream Shorts

Most times, when I go to bed, and am almost asleep, my brain begins playing short (i.e. five seconds or so) random dream-like sequences before I actually fall asleep and begin to dream. Does anyone else experience this?

Yeah, I have the dream-like sequences, usually based on what I'm thinking about before I fall asleep.

I'm sure someone is going to make a 20 paragraph post about what it really is, and why it happens...

Yeah it happens to me too. Usaually it has nothing to do with what I'm thinking. I'll just see a short flash or an image.

This is hypnagogia. You see, when your conscious begins to fall asleep the subconscious begins to come out. Some people experience this state naturally and others would experience it in hypnosis or meditation. It's basically just your subconscious' abstract thinking and imagination starting to come out. That's my understanding of it.
