DILD - Dream Initiated Lucid Dream

Dream Initiated Lucid Dream - DILD
      Basic Tutorial for Beginners

      What

DILD is one of the two main induction methods that you can use to get a Lucid Dream.
The main difference between DILD and another main induction method called WILD:

DILD - you go to sleep normally. Then when in a dream, you realize you are dreaming.
WILD - you let your body fall asleep while you keep your mind aware, until dream is ready and you enter it without losing consciousness.

      How

As I mentioned above, you have a DILD, when having a regular dream and you suddenly realize that you are dreaming.
In order to realize that, we have to teach our minds to ask a question "Am I dreaming?" when in a dream.

This is done by asking the same question during day. While doing this, believe that you are in a dream.

      1. During the day, no matter what you are doing, stop and ask yourself "Am I dreaming"?
      2. Look around. Examine your surroundings. Does everything look the way it should?
      3. Ask yourself how you got there. What have you been doing 5 minutes ago? And before that?

Now it's time to do a Reality Check (RC), and a mantra (simple phrase that you repeat).

There are many different RCs and mantras that you can chose from, or you can make your own.

For this example I will use the classic "looking at hands" RC with mantra.
      4. Bring your hands up to chest level and look at your palms.
      5. Examine them. Do they look as they normally do? Count your fingers. Don't presume how many you have.
      6. Say "Next time I'm dreaming, I look at my hands and realize I'm dreaming."
      7. Put your hands down, bring them back up and repeat RC with mantra a few times.

It doesn't really matter how many times you do it. What matters is that you believe that you could be in a dream, you just don't know it yet. Don't, at any point, think to yourself "No, I'm not dreaming."
      8. Repeat above steps when you are sitting on your bed ready to go to sleep.
      9. As you are falling asleep, repeat your mantra only.

It would be best if this mantra is the last thought you have just before you fall asleep.
If it keeps you awake, start falling asleep normally and say your mantra when you are close to falling asleep.
Or say it a few times, then just go to sleep normally.

Pretty soon this behavior starts happening in your regular dreams and you will gain awareness and become lucid.

How soon, that's different for everybody. It could be tonight, or in a few weeks or in a month.

It really helps if you are excited about the prospect of having the greatest adventure you can imagine,
and if you know that you will, without any doubt.

Additional RCs you can add to/replace the "looking at hands" RC. It's good to do at least 2-3 different RCs at the time. Pick your favorites or make up your own.

      1. Looking at hands + Counting fingers
      2. Nose plug
      3. Thumb/palm
      4. Gravity
      5. Try to change something
      6. Switches
      7. Reading

      1. In Waking Life (IWL) Look at your hands, palms up and notice details. Count your fingers. In dream, look at your hands. Do they look normal (color, shape, size, can you make your finger longer?) Count your fingers. Do you have the right amount? This is a good RC, because your hands are always there, IWL and in a dream and you can practice this discretely.

      2. IWL - pinch your nose shut with your hand and try to breathe. If you can breathe, you are in a dream. Also a good RC, because your nose is always there, little less discrete to practice.

      3. IWL - Try to gently push your thumb through a palm of your other hand. Pay attention to the sensation. Anticipate, that it will go through. In dream, do the same. If it goes through, you are dreaming. Good RC also because you don't have to go and look for them and quite discrete to practice.

      4. IWL - Say, "If this was a dream, I could levitate" and expect to float up. Do the same in a dream. Good RC, you can do it anywhere and totally discrete.

      5. IWL - look at something and say "if this was a dream, that [something] would be [something else]. You can think of an item being some other item, or try to change color, size, movement... It's fun and it transfers into your dream very well. Don't forget to use emotions when doing it - be sure you are in a dream, so the thing will change.

      6. Try to turn on a light switch. In a dream, flipping a switch usually won't do anything. But people do report that they can turn on lights in a dream. And if there is no light switch near in a dream, you would have to look for one and waste your time.

      7. Try to read. In a dream, you can read, but when you take a second look, it will say something different, or gibberish. Also time on a clock may have letters instead of numbers. But it can also look correct. And you have to find a clock in a dream before you can do RC.

What you just read is a basic practice, that is perfectly capable to give you a LD tonight.

You can of course read more and expand on your knowledge and apply your own ideas, so it works for you the best it can.

Yes it is normal. People at first tend to start questioning reality, but sometimes fail to become lucid. It's a good sign, but make sure you are being conscious of the situation when you do a reality check. Mechanical actions don't help, and even questioning isn't that effective unless you are aware that you might be dreaming at any point of your life.

Am I missing it or do the discuss this DV tutorial threads not have a link to the tutorial in question? A link would be useful so that we don't accidentally discuss a different tutorial. Do you mean the one in the Wiki?

It took me a full month before I got my first one, I questioned what one of my dream characters resembled and man was it f'd up lol. Anyways my next one I met Morgan freeman on command and toured Hong Kong! Funny thing is I wold count my fingers too five and ask "is this a dream?" In my RCs but when becoming lucid I never did this, it kinda just came to me like a light bulb. Maybe it's just that ur brain responds to anything suggestive about lucid dreaming and knows when to "wake up". Just a wild stab in the dark

      Congrats on lucid dreams!
It's awareness and questioning mindset that makes one lucid, and reality checks help with those, becoming lucid without actually doing reality check in dream is not uncommon because most often one does reality check itself in dream due to awareness getting high enough.
And it's indeed right before waking up is when one's awareness is often highest.

DILD is the only method that has worked for me.
I have tried WILD a lot of times, and only one time i succeeded without drifting away. Then i saw a dark hallway with a little girl in the end of. This was followed by horrible scratching sound, like metal being torn apart, and my vision glitching towards this incredible frightening child. This, of course, woke me up

DILD seems to me like a little more comfortable approach to lucidity, with the drawback being the smaller success rate and not always being able to attend lucidity when wanted.
Personally it seems like my dreams has evolved "against" me since the day that i started reality checking. My dreams are being more and more realistic, with electric equipment functioning almost perfectly, even internet on computers.
That said, i rarely attain lucidity through reality checking anyway, its more like i just know i am dreaming. Or that something is so illogical that i think, this must be a dream. Sometimes i perform a reality check after this to confirm my suspicions, but i can only remember a few times this has happened.

My problems however, surfaces when i'm taking the dream to the next level. I have a hard time anchoring the dream, and it seems like i suddenly have no idea what to do when i achieve lucidity.
Like one time i remember, i just went with the flow, and just floated around in the dream word, amazed by its creations. This however brought me out of lucidity after a while.

Do you guys have any tips for me? I would greatly appreciate it.

Best way to stay anchored in a dream is to engage all your senses. Stomp your feet, clap/rub your hands, talk/sing, smell the air, eat something, keep looking around, become part of a dream. All this, but without the urgency.

If you can't remember what to do once lucid, you can write your list of goals in your dream journal. Maybe pick just one of them for each night, so it's easier to remember. Draw a picture of it, think about it, daydream about it.

When I started out, I heard that yelling out commands, like "clarity now" and "awareness now" can also help with getting more awareness and details and such. I tried yelling, but all I did was a whisper. So I started practicing yelling commands during day. I pretended I just got lucid and yelled out commands and expected them to work.

I did the same practice with stabilizing/anchoring. Rubbed my hands, patted my arms, stomped my feet... And in my next lucid, I heard my voice for the first time ever in a dream and I saw my hands and legs while stabilizing.

RCs- yes, they are more to confirm, what you already suspect or know. And that suspicion comes from awareness. Without that, we rarely even get the urge to RC, and if we do, we don't get lucid, because it's the awareness, that gets us lucid. Sometimes people say, "I didn't even need the RC, I just got lucid out of the blue". They don't realize, that it wasn't out of the blue. It was due to hightened awareness from questioning reality that we do before or during RCing in waking life.

The sounds you heard when WILDing - they are quite normal. If you tried WILD again, you would most likely not hear the same thing, or not hear anything at all. If you WILD while having pleasant thoughts, your experience will most likely be a pleasant one.

With practice, you can get your DILD frequency up to having at least one a week, or even more. But of course, it warries from person to person. WILDs can also be unreliable, because not every attempt is a success even for a seasoned WILDer.

Both methods have their pros and cons. Well, mostly pros They bring you different experience, especially the HH when WILDing. Happy dreams

Thank you for the fast and in-depth reply gab! I will be sure to try these techniques the next time i have the opportunity. I have tried a technique where i would look at my hands and yell out, "anchor me" or "anchor this dream", but I've had little success. Therefor i will be sure to try to practice this ability while awake, because it sounds like something that could work. Just like reality-checks.
I also have alot of fake awakenings, and i rarely realize this, do you have any tips about how i could most efficiently counter fake awakenings, or prevent them?

It was not really this vision that made me not try WILD anymore, its just that i have a hard time engaging in it. Either i just drift of, or absolutely nothing happen. So i will be sure to check out some of the WILD techs on the forum to see if i can get them to work.

It was actually in my first lucid dream (a DILD) that i had had my greatest success, in this first dream i teleported, created an white empty space where i spawned a lot of things. This dream ended when i tried to teleport home, but what met me was a bizarre transformation of my childhood home, and my father half human and half monster. This freaked me out, so i waked up.

      You are welcome.

As to FAs - false awakenings. They can be a great opportunity to get lucid. If you RC and question your reality everytime you get up from bed, pretty soon you will start RCing in your FAs, since most of them starts in your bed.

WILDing is a delicate ballance of falling asleep and not falling asleep at the same time. You try to stay awake until a dream is ready for you to enter. Mantras can help with keeping your mind awake until that moment comes. An excellent, detailed WILD (sageous) explanation is here, and here is our shorter version. Sageous also has classes in that link I just linked you to.

It's common to wake up due to excitement or being startled. No worries, you'll have many more.

Would having a fan on in my room make my chances slim of having a DILD? My room get's horribly hot so I keep the fan on, I can sleep fine with it and it does not disturb me. I actually find it peaceful.

No, a fan will definitely not interfere with your chances to DILD or to WILD. If you can sleep with it on, you can lucid dream with it on.

So simply put for this to work, I need to keep telling myself "am I dreaming?2 and count my fingers to ten and push my finger into my palm, keep doing this until I go to bed hoping that I remember to repeat this in my dreams?

I then do what I kept repeating as a reality check while in the dream to gain self-awareness.

I then do what I kept repeating as a reality check while in the dream to gain self-awareness.
Reality checks are one half of the process. The other half is you awareness. You do them together.

Start out by asking yourself if you are dreaming (or telling yourself, that you are dreamin). Then look at your environment and ask yourself if it looks allright. Does it look the same as you remember it, as it looked yesterday? Do you remember how you got where you are now? What did you do just 5 min, 30 min, ... ago? Basically, to be aware of yourself and your place in your environment.

After that, you do a few RCs. Which ones, it's up to you. Pick 2-3 that you like and do them all. Then tell yourself "next time I'm dreaming, I [look at my hands, pinch my nose, stick my finger through palm...] and realize I'm dreaming. It's enough if in your mantra you say only one of your RCs.

Then this action will start showing up in your dreams, because you do it often. But what's more important, the realization of 'wow, this could be a dream" will start happening in your regular dreams and that is what will give you a hint of awareness and lucidity and get you lucid.

If you don't really believe that you are dreaming and that your RC will work when you practicing it, it may happen, that in your dream you will RC, but you will not get lucid.

The awareness and believing, that you are dreaming and that your thumb will go through your palm, that you can breathe with pinched nose, that you can fly,... that is the most important thing about reality checking.

How long should it take before I have a lucid dream roughly? I've been doing what you explained for an hour and a half, if I kept doing this so until Tuesday, is it possible to have a lucid dream? Could it be possible I might have one tonight?

How long did it take for you to have a lucid dream?

You can absolutely have one tonight. I did. But I was super super excited and for half a day, I thought of nothing else then how cool lucid dreaming sounds and that I can't believe, it even exists and I was just so happy to have discovered it. I also read some exciting threads, namely this one http://www.dreamviews.com/general-lu...other-dcs.html

Of course, this thread may not be so exciting to you, so just read around, check out some more tutorials and visualize what would you do in your first lucid.

Even if everything done right, most people get their first one after few days, or even weeks of practice. Don't give up, you can do it

While I lie in bed, should I try to stay aware? Repeat the mantra "am I dreaming" or should I just sleep naturally?

Best time for our mind to register a mantra (your intent) is as you are falling asleep. When you are almost asleep. You just think it, don't say it at that point. But if it keeps you awake, then just say it a few time and then go to sleep normally.

I usually start by mumbling my mantra, then as I'm getting more and more sleepy, I just repeat it in my mind and if it keeps me awake, I stop and just go to sleep.

But of course, the goal is to fall asleep.
