The Presence of the Past by Rupert Sheldrake

On the subject of scientific studies that have demonstrated ESP related phenomena....A coworker recommended Rupert Sheldrake. I haven't read any of his stuff, and probably won't, so I don't have an opinion about whether its any good. But the person who recommended it has an electromagnetics related PhD and seems to be objective about such things.

Like a lot of other people here, I'm kind of worn out on the demonstrating paranormal phenomena topic. But I thought I'd share the name for other people who are interested.

Thanks for posting about Rupert Sheldrake. I hope to transcribe this. I enjoy transcribing. Some times video is taken off the net but if I transcribed it I am not so disappointed.

Rupert Sheldrake is a British former biochemist and plant physiologist who now researches and writes on parapsychology and other controversial subjects. His books and papers stem from his theory of morphic resonance, and cover topics such as animal and plant development and behaviour, memory, telepathy and perception.

In 2003, Sheldrake published The Sense of Being Stared At on the psychic staring effect, including an experiment where blindfolded subjects guessed whether persons were staring at them or at another target. He reported that, in tens of thousands of trials, the scores were consistently above chance (60%) when the subject was being stared at, but only 50% (random chance) when the subject was not being stared at. This suggested a weak sense of being stared at but no sense of not being stared at. He also claimed that these experiments were widely repeated, in schools in Connecticut and Toronto and a science museum in Amsterdam, with consistent results.

      ten minute Clip 1/3 (00:00 to 02:00)

      Transcript: (00:00 to 02:00)

      (00:00)

Well because I think telepathy is a basic feature of communication among animals within animal groups, because I think it is normal not paranormal, natural not supernatural, I have spent a lot of time investigating telepathy in animals. This area has been almost completely ignored so there have been very, very few studies of animal telepathy. (00:22)

Yet as soon as you begin to think about it and especially if you focus on the animals we know best, dogs and cats for example it turns out that there is a huge amount of evidence. (00:33)

Many people who keep dogs and cats are convinced that there animals can read their minds. Of course they form close bonds with their owners so we do get that feature of the “bond” which is key for telepathy. (00:44)

Many cat owners for example are convinced that their cat can read their mind and their intentions when they are planning to take their cat to the Vet. (00:55) The cat disappears. (giggles from audience)

When this has happened, quite often, people try their very best not to let the cat know. They don’t let it see them getting out the carrying basket, they don’t talk about the vet, some even try not to even think about the Vet and some people have even gone so far as to ring the Vet from work to make the appointment so the cat doesn’t overhear the phone call. (laughter from audience) And then they swing by home on the way after work to pick-up the cat and take it to the Vet and it’s still not there. (laughter)

I collect stories of this kind. I have a database of thousands of case histories. We’ve got hundreds of stories about cats and Vets. So, I wanted to see how common this was, so, my associates and I rang-up all the Vets listed in the North London yellow pages, (1:44) sixty-five of them.

And asked if they ever had a problem with people missing appointments with their cats. 64 out of 65 said, “Yes it happened all the time”. And the one exception said, (1:55) “It happened so often, I gave having an appointment system for cats, people have to just turn-up with their animals”. (02:00) (laughter)

      (2:00 to 4:00)

2nd post Rupert Sheldrake Telepathy 1 of 3

      (2:00 to 4:00)

There are many other ways in which dogs and cats seem to read their owner’s minds. I discuss these in detail in my book, “Dogs that know when there owners are coming home and other unexplained powers of animals”. But as the title implies one of the phenomena that’s most interesting (2:22) is indeed, dogs knowing when their owner’s are coming home.

A lot of people have found that their dogs or cats seem to know when a member of the family is coming home and wait at a door or window. And of cause no one thinks that’s odd if it’s a routine time because then it could just be a biological clock. No one thinks it’s very odd if it’s just a minute or two before because it could just be hearing footsteps in the street or the crunch or car wheels on the gravel.

What’s odd is when it happens 5, 10 minutes in advance or even half-an-hour in advance when people come home at non-routine times. We have 800 or so cases of dogs doing that on our database and about 500 of cats. Most of them at non-routine times because that’s when people really notice the phenomenon and think it’s striking.

We’ve done random household surveys to find out how common this is and in Britain and the United States about 50% of dog owners say their dogs anticipate arrivals and about 30% of cat owners. I don’t think cats are necessarily less sensitive than dogs; some of them are just less interested. (laughter)

      (3:33)

Now when I was discussing this with my sceptical friend, Nicolas Humphrey, years ago, to my surprise he didn’t deny the phenomenon. He said, “O my dog used to do that. My mother always knew when I was coming home about half-an-hour in advance”. So, I said, “That’s very, very interesting Nick. How do you think it did it? It couldn’t possibly have been hearing your car from twenty miles away, the other side of Cambridge”. He said, “Oh, on the contrary, it just shows what sharp hearing they’ve got”. (laughter)

      (4:00 to 6:00)

3nd post Rupert Sheldrake Telepathy 1 of 3

      (4:00 to 6:00)

So, so, that’s what gave me the idea for the experiment. Whenever he and I disagreed we tried to think up experiments to resolve our disagreements. So I said, “Ok, what would happen if you came home on the train, borrowed a bicycle and cycled form the station so there’s no familiar sounds? Would the dog still know you were coming?

He said, “Of course not, maybe just a minute or two before he might hear me or smell me”. “But” he said, “Of course it wouldn’t”

And I said, “Maybe it would”

And that’s the bases for this key experiment. I’ve done hundreds of tests with dogs that know when there owners are coming home. And how we do the test is we film the place where the dog waits for the whole time the persons out. So we have a continuous record of that. (4:44)

We have the person go five miles from home and we have them come home at randomly chosen times. We communicate through a pager and they don’t know in advance when they are going to come home.

      (4:55)

And to avoid familiar car sounds we have them come home in Taxi’s.

      (5:00)

In these experiments it’s over and over again, dogs know when they’re coming home. They go and start waiting when the person decides to come home. When they form that intention, before they’ve even got into the taxi.

We have this on film, hundreds of these films. This is all published now in peer reviewed scientific journals. And of course it is summarized in my book, “Dogs that know when their owners are coming home”.

This is now pretty robust experimental evidence.

And unlike many experiments on human telepathy, it’s very repeatable. A lot of those card guessing type experiments on human telepathy are terribly boring. And usually the scores fall-off with time cos people just get bored with guessing meaningless cards over and over again.

Dogs never get bored of their owners coming home. (laughter)

So, you can do this experiment over and over again year after year. I have a great film of that. I’m not showing it this evening because there isn’t time to show and go over all this evidence in detail.

      (6:00 to 7:26) Wow

4nd post Rupert Sheldrake Telepathy 1 of 3

      (6:00 to 7:26)

But, after my book, “Dogs that know when their owners are coming home” was published I got hundreds, thousands of letters from pet owners all over the world with yet more cases. And the new phenomenon that came to my attention, I had not really focussed on it much when I was doing my earlier work, concerned Parrots.

It turns out Parrots can be extraordinarily telepathic with their owners.

Many people who have parrots, particularly African Greys, have found they seem to read their minds and pick-up their thoughts. And the most remarkable cases come in language using parrot, parrots that speak. With dogs and cate people say, “If only they could talk”, well a lot of parrots can and what happens then is truly remarkable.

One of the most interesting cases I have ever come across came to my attention four years ago in 2000.

A young woman in Manhattan, New York told me that her parrot which had a huge vocabulary, read her thoughts,

      (7:07)

and said what she was thinking about. If she was thinking about a picture in a magazine it would comment on the picture even though even though it couldn’t see it.

Most extraordinary of all it wakes her from dreams by commenting on here dreams. (laughter) Sleeps in her bedroom and often wakes her up by saying what she is dreaming about

      O O O Kay Kay Kay

When I heard these stories I could hardly believe this was true it was so far off the end of the scale form anything I had heard before so I went to New York as soon as I could and went to visit the parrot and its owner. I was astonished. First of all this parrot speaks in sentences. I speaks in full sentences and thousands of different sentences is says. It now has, this year, a vocabulary of about 1,000 words. It’s the world record talking parrot. In the Guinness Book of Records the maximum they vocabulary record is 800 words.

      (8:07)

(?) who owns this parrot was inspired by an American professor a person called (? Irene Peperburg) who’s been working with a parrot called Alex for the last 20 years. Irene Peperburg has established that Alex uses language meaningfully. The parrot doesn’t just parrot things he actually uses words in an abstract way. For example, words for colours he knows and you can hold out a tray of objects that Alex has never seen before and say give me the yellow one and he’ll bend over and pick up the yellow object with his beak even though he’s never seen that particular object before. Showing he can use the word “Yellow” in an abstract way not just linked to particular objects.

So Perperburg has already established that parrots can use language meaningfully which was a big surprise to people in the scientific world. (…)

      (…)

(9:33) … It (Alex) did show astonishing telepathic abilities

(9:33) … It (Alex) did show astonishing telepathic abilities

      to continue

I was so amazed by this parrot that I set up some simple tests right there and then. In which it did show astonishing telepathic abilities.

      (9:33)

We set up a controlled series of experiments on telepathy.

We got a third party to put photographs, with images, corresponding to words the parrot knows in a series of sealed envelopes, 150 sealed envelopes, each with a different image, randomized, sealed in thick brown paper envelopes. Nobody knew what was in each envelope.

      In these experiments

Amy went into a different room to the parrot on a different floor and then opened one of the envelopes and looked at the image for 2 minutes.

While the parrot was filmed in the other room to see if it said anything corresponding to what she was looking at.

And then she opened the next envelope.

We’ve done over 100 of these tests

And then she opened the next envelope, so there is a series of tests, we’ve done over 100 of these tests. The results are very, very amazing. In an astonishing number of cased the parrot said exactly what she was looking at.

We’ve had all this data transcribed by independent transcribers, analysed by independent statisticians. The results come out way, way, way above chance, far more successful that most human telepathy tests. This again is published in scientific journals and summarized in my most recent book, The Sense of Being Stared At.

Amy’s parrot is continuing to develop his vocabulary and these astonishing telepathic incidences happen on a daily basis. I introduced Amy and Kesy to Jane Goodal and now Jane visits whenever she’s in New York and she things this is one of the most interesting animals in the world and I must say I agree it is truly remarkable.

And this parrot, the main point of Amy’s studies really was to study language use and something to do with animal consciousness. The parrot uses the word “I” appropriately; it seems to have a sense of self. It changes a lot of our ideas about what animals can do.

And because it’s only a bird and not a chimp or a monkey or an ape it’s got such a different kind of brain from us, it’s totally astonishing that it can use language meaningfully, use proper grammar and syntax and seems to have a kind of consciousness. And also of course it’s highly interactive with Amy and indeed with other people, and it talks to me too when I go over there. We have conversations.

Well, this is very astonishing. What I want to do now is talk something about human telepathy because this is what I’ve been investigating most recently.

"The Presence of the Past" interview (00:00 t0 1:48)

      Jeffrey Mishlove interviews Rupert Sheldrak.

      (00:00)

Rupert Sheldrake Ph.D (author of The Presence of the Past):

We now have an evolutionary cosmology, after more than 2,000 years on Western thought of the universe being thought of an essentially eternal. Or at least if created by God in the beginning then going on indefinitely thereafter. But, we now have the idea of the universe as an evolutionary system starting with the Big Bang and the idea that it’s been growing and evolving ever since. So, the idea that it’s governed by eternal laws doesn’t really make sense and I would suggest that instead of it all having a kind of Napoleonic Code established at the outset, that, if there are laws of nature then they’ve evolved just as the laws of the United States have evolved or the laws of England have evolved over time.

      (0:54)

      Interviewer, Jeffrey Mishlove Ph.D:

The way physicists tend to look at this now, according to some physicists I’ve spoken to is that, if you look at say the first billionth of a second after the Big Bang, the laws that we now experience and the properties of the universe didn’t exist at all the universe was structured quite differently and then, even during the first second things changed quite rapidly.

      (1:18)

Rupert Sheldrake Ph.D (author of The Presence of the Past):

But this is the effect of physics taking evolution seriously. And you see, until 1966 physics held-out against evolution which had become the dominant idea in the human sciences, in the life sciences. They still went on believing that the universe was eternal. They were the last people to take-up this evolution idea. We forget how recent this is. Most of our education, most of our thinking was shaped under the aspect of a much older, and much more classical paradigm.
