Question How to I seperate myself from Mind and Ego in pursuit of the Truth?

I am reading an amazing book, "The Naked Now" by Richard Rohr. I will not detail it here. I mention this only because I just read, in essence, that the mind seeks to know, and the ego is tied to the mind. Assuming, from a non-judgmental, simple acceptance, place of yes this is true, then I have a problem...

I have been stating a list of intentions every day when I get up and every night before I go to bed. This is based on another excellent book, Jack Canfield's, "Key To Living The Law of Attraction". I know it works, so I use this every day, and it has helped me through a number of things. I use this to state the things I want, leaving me free to pray to God without treating Him like Santa Claus. I am coming to realize this is not the purpose of prayer. But I digress...

One of my intentions is this, "Today I want to know the Truth." From our standpoint of that earlier statement being true, this traps me in the ego. Because the mind wants to know, the ego wants to control, and the two are intrinsically linked. I have decided to change this, and combine it, with another intention, "Today I want to be aware of the Truth and my True Nature."

Is this sufficient to untie me from the ego? If not how do I get around this? I want to be free of my Christian religion. But I can't turn my back on it until I know whether or not the Bible is true, or whether or not there is only a Heaven and Hell in the afterlife, or many vibrational states, or something else. The more I see how the Christian faith traps you, through fear, in its religion, the more I want to rid myself of it, but I can't risk the real me, the part of me that will live on long after my body has died, going to a place of eternal suffering and pain. I've had enough of that here on earth.

Also I have developed a theory... That Dreaming and Astral Projection must be far easier and more experiential for those two are not as attached to their egos. The ego ties you to your physical body, to your physical mind. To be free of the ego then is to loosen your ties to your body, making it easier to leave it.

Does anyone have any insight, thoughts, or instruction here? I realize that this may not be the best forum for this, but I thought I'd throw up my arms and ask for someone to through me a floatation device, because I am sinking in the mires of my own limited point of view.

      Your help is greatly appreciated!

I will try my best to respond to your concerns and difficulties. My usefulness may be limited by my own experience (which is the same problem you say you're having), but maybe you can get something helpful out of this.

I think your first priority should be to let go of the idea of hell. Of course this is not something that you just decide to do, and then it's done. It takes courage, but it can be accomplished and the rewards are nothing less than your own intellectual freedom. It's important to know that disregarding hell doesn't mean disregarding God! I have been through this, and have come up with a variety of "defeats of hell". If you take some time and meditate on these, you may see the truth in them without having to force beliefs into or out of your head, which is of course a wast of time.

As it happens, I've posted a couple of these already, so I'll just link them.

      Defeat of hell #1 [link]
see my post towards the bottom of this thread, it's the first and simplest one that I used many years ago. It is, like I said, rather simplistic.

      Defeat of hell #2 [link]
this kind of gets to the heart of why the concept of hell is detrimental to humanity.

      Defeat of hell #3
a series of questions I asked someone on another forum once (just think about them):

      I think hell is:
      A) a fair punishment for non-believers (or those guilty of whatever-it-is that carries the sentence, as it seems to differ from place to place)
      B) too harsh in my opinion, but that's not up to me

      If you said B:
      I think:
      C) God understands justice more perfectly than humans are capable of
      D) I can understand God's justice if I am devout and study God's will diligently, in which case I may one day see that hell is fitting punishment.

      Defeat of hell #4
I think I saw somewhere that you were reading some Dawkins, if so check out chapter 11 of The Selfish Gene (and the rest of the book as well, it's quite excellent), the chapter where he introduces Memetics. It helps to thoroughly understand what the idea actually is, in order to dismiss it. I think this is a great explanation of how the concept of hell is so virulent.

      Defeat of hell #5
Try to find anything that talks about determinism, be it philosophical, neurological, theological, etc. It all lends evidence to the perspective that hell is unjustified.

I can think of a few more as well, but this is a start. Just meditate on them, and maybe you'll make some progress. Good luck

A good way to keep your ego at bay is, controlling your fears and knowing when you should analyze your actions and how to analyze them.

Analyzing your actions in the incorrect moment, can be driven by your ego/fear to distract you from confronting your fears, sometimes it's a trick, your fear will surface enough to make you stop doing what creates the tension, analyzing can involve this.

If you correct the form that you analyse yourself you can avoid running away from your fears, it's keeping your mind focused on confronting your problems but at the same time watching yourself like from outside to be able to see what's happening to you.

The easiest way to advance a lot, if you're stuck, is ignoring your fears , or controlling the outcome of your fears. You just have to fight it. If you only listen to your fears, Fears have taken controll of your life. You have to listen to your values, identity, what represents you at a deep level.

When you have controlled your fears you'll be more close to trusting your self and advancing, well this works in my case at least.

Have you ever been humiliated? I assume you have since pretty much everybody has, but humility is most likely the best way to reduce one's ego. I'm not talking about being made fun of by others but beaten at something you thought you were good at or were confident in. Granted, this reduces confidence but it also reduces ego since if you have a large ego you are likely very confident as well. You should hang out with people better/smarter than you or just talk to them. If they correct you on something or beat you in anyway don't get angry, reflect on what just happened. This way you are not "bullied" but instead grow from it and, by reducing your ego, become more humble which is a trait many people enjoy in others as well as themselves.

Let me ask this. Why do you believe the ego wants to control, and what exactly do you think it is trying to control? You don't need to get rid of your ego, you just need to understand it, and your ego being a part of yourself you better understand yourself as well.

So ask yourself, why do you fear going to hell? It is likely because you been told so many times that it was real, that you were brainwashed into believing it. Though when you look at the facts logically, you know that the religion isn't based on facts and that it clearly isn't true. So why are you scared? Well you suffered through a series of traumatic events meant to scare you.

If you have a phobia of spiders, does telling yourself not be scared of spiders help? No. Does thinking about it logically and saying, "A spider I could easily crush and is insignificant to me is no threat and so I should have no fear" remove the fear? No. To remove the fear you probably just need to get accustomed to it with time. What you should probably be doing is every morning when you wake up is say, "Hell doesn't exist and so I do not fear it."

By trying to break out of prison, you overlook the fact that nothing is holding you in the first place. You look inside and hear only your own voice; you look behind you and it is empty, you look ahead and it is light. The mind does not want to know, the mind already knows and it is you who is confused. Contemplate this, and do not perpetuate a family feud.

The ego does not tie you to your physical body. You tie your self to the ego. Of course the mind would allow you to do this - it is already liberated, and will not infringe upon your freedom. Look outside and you will see only your own mind, look inside and you will see only your own mind. The truth is in being with the mind! All of those concepts seem heavy... you won't be able to catch up unless you leave them behind. Contemplate this, and do not perpetuate a tyranny.

I fail to see how you can be amused by something as important as the fate of your inner energy after your physical body dies.

      There are three main possibilities:
      1. You die and that's it.

Unlikely, as energy does not die, it changes form. Whatever it is that powers your body will change form after the physical body has died.

      2. You die and go to either Heaven or Hell.

This is the typical Christian/religious belief. There is Heaven, with only one way in, and any other way leads to Hell. Both are eternal.

Similar to this are the beliefs of Valhalla and the Elysium Fields.

      3. You die and go into or beyond the Astral Plane.

This is what other religions outside Christianity tend to believe. You rest for a while then reincarnate on a many lives journey of spiritual development. Once you have reached your ultimate spiritual development you either leave the planes altogether, or you cease to reincarnate, staying in the highest plane you reached.

To my mind this is not something to be taken lightly.

Then how will you ever reach enlightenment? You seem to want to be lead through a deep, dark tunnel. Listen, I'll save you a lot of time in the future by telling you that no reason will lead you to the truth, no religion will lead you to the truth, no belief you ever have will lead you to the truth, no living will lead you to the truth, no dying will lead you to the truth, no idea will lead you to the truth, no theory will lead you to the truth, and no word will lead you to the truth. If you want to untie yourself from your ego, stop using the word "I". "I" comes from the ego.

If not how do I get around this?

      get around what?

I want to be free of my Christian religion.

But I can't turn my back on it until I know whether or not the Bible is true,

The Bible is obviously true, noted by the hundreds or thousands of contradictions in it. Any book that constantly contradicts itself is obviously true, and you should follow it, read it every day, and no other books. at all.

or whether or not there is only a Heaven and Hell in the afterlife, or many vibrational states, or something else.

You want to know the truth? Then, stop saying, "I want to know the truth," and read some books on church history. Learn about the history of the Bible itself. Learn about Serapis Kristos, Ptolemy, The Nicean Council, The Crusades, Gehenna, Hades, Sheol, Dante's Inferno, The First World of Buddhism, the Sixth World of Buddhism, Constantine, The King of the World, The Voice of God, The Emperor of Rome, The Spanish Inquisition, Saint Patrick.

The more I see how the Christian faith traps you, through fear, in its religion, the more I want to rid myself of it, but I can't risk the real me, the part of me that will live on long after my body has died, going to a place of eternal suffering and pain. I've had enough of that here on earth.

If you really want to be free of Christianity then you must commit heresy, but you may not be ready for that right now. Probably better to first arm yourself with knowledge of history.

Does anyone have any insight, thoughts, or instruction here?

      yes
