There's a "golden light" or "white light" meditation that is good for beginners. Its basically visualizing/imagining a gold or white light filling your body and clearing it of negative energies. People who do it sometimes report feelings or sensations. It lasts from about 5 to 10 minutes depending on how long it takes to visualize it and how long you want to stay in this state.
Also, when getting into the meditative state, I sometimes count down from 10 to 1, and tell myself that with each number I am getting more and more focused, and that at 1 my mind will be clear and I will be completely in the meditative state. It helps with visualizing to either say the numbers, or imagine drawing them on a chalk board in front of you, then erasing for each new number. Or combing numbers and sounds. Then going out of the meditative state I just repeat the process in reverse, except waking myself up out of it instead.
