      Plants for self exploration

Have any of you used plants as a form of self-exploration?

I have a flying ointment (it's basically an ointment used to induce visionary journeys), made of belladonna and other plants, and I smeared a little on the lower part of my neck before going to sleep, and in between my eyebrows. I had a vivid, strange and creepy dream that night and with no doubt was induced by the ointment.

I have also used mugwort tea a little before sleeping which helped with dream lucidity (all the colours you don't see in ordinary dreams!), and ginkgo biloba pills. The interesting thing with ginkgo, is that the more often you take it, the more vivid you become in your dreams. I remember three days after taking it, the lucidity increased so much! By one and half weeks the lucidity just kept increasing, but I ran out! I took three pills with 300 grams in each. Anyone can attain lucidity with ginkgo alone in a matter of three weeks, I believe!

Would love to know your experiences!

My favorite dream plant so far is calea. I've used it many times and I would always smoke it immediately before bed. My dreams are very frequently lucid with it, and they get to be what I like to call pointlessly detailed. Every scene is not just full of color and life, but whereas in a normal dream I might be in my room with a couple friends in a calea dream I'll be outside in a well-lit public place completely packed full of people each with their own vivid and detailed sets of clothes, various objects in hand, hair color and style, race, sex, etc. Though, in one dream where it was happening I was leaping (like Hulk jumping) from one roof of an amusement park building to the next and just scanning the crowd and I noticed that after a while I would just see the same people over and over again despite being in different locations, like my brain ran out of memory space or something.

On a combination of smoking damiana and taking capsules containing St. John's wort I experienced a night full of vivid and romantic dreams where the architecture was highly complex and blatantly based on form constants (spiral, tunnels, lattices, cobwebs). There were also some fractals involved, and objects and characters in the dreams would change shape frequently. I haven't tried that combination again since then so I'm not sure if it was a fluke or something repeatable.

Mugwort I liked too, though I haven't used it that much. It gives my dreams a very trippy mindset, I really should look into it again....

I'm pretty sure I've tried more than those, but those are the big ones that come to mind right now. I haven't used any tropanes like with your flying ointment, though I would like to. The ginkgo biloba thing is actually pretty interesting, I never gave it much thought before but I have read that only when used consistently (not just with a single dose) it acts a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. This class of pharmaceuticals is looking promising for the treatment of ADHD right now, helping people be able to stay focused. Maybe taking it regularly also increases the amount of awareness you have in dreams through the same method?

Oh, and technically peppermint if you count menthol, though I generally got it from cough drops. I guess I did try the tea.... But menthol's cool, it gives me very sexual dreams that have a lot of control when I'm lucid. It also increased my visualization and gave me my second accidental WILD.

I'll definitely try calea! The reason I haven't before is because I didn't know how to prepare it. Do you grow it yourself? I'm planting poppies, I want to see what effect the sap will have on dreams.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! I'll try peppermint tea and plant some calea. Unfortunately my sex dreams don't last long, and I almost always remember only the beginning or the end part, and wake up feeling lusty and disappointed. lol.

I have another ointment made with henbane, which is more potent than the belladonna, but haven't tried it since the belladonna is already too effective. Personally I'm a little frightened to use it at night, I get scared easily and the last dream I had with it was really dark and creepy. Try it if you're up for something different. Mandrake is good too if you don't mind bitter teas.

Ginkgo has so many benefits, it's worth taking even if you're not interested in lucid dreams. I love it. But once you stop using it, the effects wear off instantly.

I like psilocybin mushrooms but san pedro and ayahuasca (psychotria and b. caapi) are good too, as is salvia divinorum. What what were we talking about?

Peppermint and st johns wort both grow in my area and like alyzarin said they both gave pretty intensive effects. The peppermint tea is good for when I have focus or meditate and the st johns wort just makes me happy and seems to give my dreams a colourfull plot line, while peppermint tea gives me sexual and dark themed dream plot lines.

I tried calea I ordered it in capsule form. I had a good recall when i tried it. on the instructions it said to take two pills before bedtime so I do so. The first time I had a very long interesting dream but it was hard to recall it. Then the next night when I tried it I recalled little to nothing. Then the third night I took the last two pills and recalled nothing. What a rip off I guess because of that I have a bias towards supplements now.

Good luck! Originally I just bought from a nearby head shop, and now I usually just order it online from one of my trusted vendors. I think it would be cool to grow it though. Poppies should definitely have an interesting effect, just be careful with that! Downers and sleep definitely require proper care.

Yeah, my sexual dreams are usually over way too fast too lol. But they can still be cool depending on what you do with the time you have.

All of the tropane plants are things that interest me, especially mandrake. It may be a coincidence, but it's the one I've heard the most reports of sexual experiences with. They're definitely all dark though, that's just anticholinergics in general. I've had dreams that were effected by diphenhydramine in the past, which works in the brain in partially the same way, and they're always really surreal or nightmarish. But I like that stuff in the right mindset.

I'll have to give the ginkgo a try some time too, it definitely sounds worth a shot.

Not all aids are for everyone, unfortunately. You shouldn't let that get in your way if you've got more options to work with though, supplements can genuinely induce some pretty interesting experiences.

Ahha! Here is the thread which talked about Ginkgo Biloba
I picked up some today. It's only 120 mg. You were taking 300 mg, so 900 mg, Goldust?
Should I worry about it making me nauseous? Should I take them with food.. and by how much time should they be spaced?

Are you in Europe? I've only found US sites selling calea, and there are no calea seeds for sale! I found one site with terrible shipping, and I don't want to order from the US cause they might open it at customs, even if it's legal I don't want them to suspect. But I find myself really needing what you describe as the calea effects! Yesterday night I had one of the funnest dreams I had in aaages (with no plant help), and I met several amazing dream-characters, especially one that I just fell in love with, but the detail... ghhhh!!! And it's like I sometimes have momentary blackouts in my dreams, and I could be talking with someone, and the next moment we're somewhere else. I need me some calea, right now. lol.
Thanks for the poppy warning! I know people sometimes forget to breath when on it..

I had one tea with mandrake, but the mandrake made up such a small portion of the tea I was skeptical it would work but it was amazing in terms of lucidity! I remember waking up mind-blown! I wrote the dream in my journal, but forgot to note 'mandrake tea' and now I can't find which dream it was exactly.. The nightshades are really some of my favourite plants, but they scare me a little. Try smoking 2 grams of Jimson's weed (otherwise known as Devil's apple), I think you'd like it! Especially if you're interested in things like astral projection and exploring other realities.. I hope to experiment more with my ointments and teas and see if anything spectacular pops up I'll share!

I tried the peppermint tea, and strangely my dreams were not sexual (rare, lol) and the weather in my dream was sunny and cloudy rather than night like my usual dreams. I'll experiment with it more, but it's definitely not what I expected after your comments, lol!

Hi Zhaylin! The minimum dose for lucid dreaming is 300mg, and you'll see a definite change in a week. I saw an increase in lucidity in just 3 days, but my dose was higher. I have even done 1500 mg doses, but the true effects will only be seen with time. It has a lot of health benefits so it's worth taking daily, especially before you sleep. I didn't feel any nausea at all, and ginkgo does not have any negative effects when consumed in very large doses! It's really great. If you have a dream journal it would be cool to write that you took ginkgo before sleeping and see how it's affected your dreamscape. They shouldn't be spaced, but I guess once you have used it for at least one month you can start skipping a day. Personally once I stopped using it the effects wore off very quickly...

Here's an interesting article I found! It mentions some of the plants we talk about here!

      Internal Use

Valerian Root has been used to induce lucid dreaming for centuries. It can help create more vivid dreams–and intense ones, too. Best method: tea or tincture.

      Calea Zachatechi
is called the Dream Herb and is a plant that has been used in parts of Mexico for a very long time. It has been scientifically proven to increase reaction time and frequency of dreams as well as encourage vivid and lucid dreams. Best method: tea.

Ginko Biloba is known to increase our brain function and improve memory. In sleep it can make dreams more vivid and we can feel more alert. Best method: capsule or tincture

Peppermint can support lucid and vivid dreaming, and some users even report a "prophetic" quality to dreams when peppermint is involved. Best method: tea or tincture.

Passionflower is very relaxing and sedative, helping to bring about a calmer dream state. Best method: tea or tincture.

External Use (eye pillows, dried or fresh herbs/flowers near bed or in pillow case)

Datura is a powerful, fragrant flower that has a history of uses around the world. Place a flower or two in your pillowcase for lucid and very vivid dreams.

Mugwort has been known to enhance vivid, lucid and prophetic dreams.

Anise's licorice-like fragrance can keep nightmares away.

Sage leaves can be used to bring more peacefulness and healing to your dreams.

Burdock is effective at keeping negativity, anger and sadness from your dream state.

Mullein can help you to ward off nightmares and have pleasant dreams.

Jasmine flowers are known to enhance erotic and romantic dreams, especially useful for women processing issues related to sex.

      Lemongrass
can boost your boring dreams by adding color and exotic elements.

Rose Petals will add a loving sense and warmth to dreams. Also especially helpful to women.

Clary Sage's super fragrant scent can provide you with some vivid and strange dreams. Ideal for the nocturnal adventurer!
I don't think many of us use external aids for lucid dreaming. It's time to throw some datura flowers in my pillow case!

I'm afraid not, I'm in the states. I was able to find a UK website that sells the plant for pretty cheap if you'd like it, but no seeds I'm afraid. They actually seem to be pretty hard to come by, though I found a couple US ones that were doing it. I can understand not wanting to do an international order on the plant, but would the seeds be as bad? I hope you can get it soon either way and have some good luck with it then, all this talking about it is making me want to get some more too. I know what you mean by those memory blackouts too, I get them from time to time. It really sucks when you know there's something that happened in between and it just won't come back. >.>

I don't know if you were ever planning to do this, but just for the record, all of those datura/belladonna/whatever plants and poppies would probably potentiate each others' negative side effects, so I would avoid using them in combination if I were you. Just to be safe. If you use the poppies alone and in cautious amounts though you should be fine, but do take care. I would highly recommend taking a test dose without going to sleep for your first time so you know how it effects you while you're still able to do something about it. But also remember not to dose too high even within a safe range, an opiate high can be pretty addictive and you don't want that mess on your hands!

Haha, I might save that smoking datura for later. It has definitely been an interest of mine, but I'm not currently using plants (aside from cannabis) for anything but altering dreams. Thanks for the recommendation, though. I actually do love deliriants, but I'm still kind of recovering from the last time I overdid them. I used to take hallucinogenic doses of diphenhydramine a lot and I got kind of burnt out on it.

About the peppermint tea, a lot of people do seem to get some dark themes from it every now and then, but there's also someone here on DV who tried menthol for the sexual dreams and just ended up being filled with a happy contentment every time she took it, still noted as a change from her regular dreams. And there's also someone who ate a whole bag of menthol cough drops in a night and ended up having four sex dreams in a row lol. So it's really up in the air, you just have to experiment with it and see how it works for you.

Ah, I never even thought about external use! That actually makes a lot of sense about datura, the pollen contains the same chemicals as the rest of the plant. I know there was some old saying or something about not sleeping under a brugmansia tree (tree datura) because it could give you vivid nightmares. You'll have to let us know how it goes!

That's a pretty cool list too, I'm definitely going to have to check some of those out. :O

Clary sage works pretty well, I've tried it and a few other similar sage plants, has a similar effect as peppermint to me. Makes me more aware and makes dream plots more complex. The effects of both peppermint and st johns wort have been kinda random for me however. In general the peppermint tea gives me strong visuals but it can vary from absolutely nothing to overly intense colour depending on the amount of sleep and amount of peppermint I take.

I can understand not wanting to do an international order on the plant, but would the seeds be as bad? I hope you can get it soon either way and have some good luck with it then, all this talking about it is making me want to get some more too. That's awesome! Please do share the link! Can't wait to try it out.
Hopefully with time the memory blackouts will decrease, but I'm really glad that I can at least remember things worth cherishing!

Haha! I wasn't planning on doing that. To be honest I usually wait a week or two before I use any of the nightshade ointments and teas again. I do intend taking a pinch of the sap and note the effects, I've read that the potency can vary from different flowers too so I think testing is something everyone should do. Have you ever experimented with opium?

Haha, I might save that smoking datura for later. It has definitely been an interest of mine, but I'm not currently using plants (aside from cannabis) for anything but altering dreams. Thanks for the recommendation, though. I actually do love deliriants, but I'm still kind of recovering from the last time I overdid them. I used to take hallucinogenic doses of diphenhydramine a lot and I got kind of burnt out on it.
At the moment I'm the same, I only use plants for altering dreams. I do intend on trying the smoke next year, and earlier than that using it in my pillowcase, once my daturas have grown enough and are plentiful! I also have an attraction to deliriants, I don't know why. I'd love to try Amanita muscaria one day too. And Salvia. >.<

True! I intend to try peppermint tea with one of my ointments, see how that goes!

To be honest, me either, even though I have been told about how wonderful their effects can be. I knew about mugwort pillows, but datura flowers are new to me and it sounds really effective! Never heard that saying before, but I love it. Definitely worth experimenting!

Unfortunately last night I had an awkward dream I don't even want to bother writing down in my journal (bad, I know), but tonight my ointment calls to me... It's gonna be a good one tonight.

Mugwort has the same effects as this to me. I remember an elaborate storyline when I drank it, and the colours! It had a flashback like a movie and everything, and I was the protagonist. The story was sexy, dangerous, and very sad. First and last time I had such a complex movie-like dream. I should try mugwort, sage and peppermint together. Alchemy time!

Haha that sounds like a mixture I made during the menthol experiment, a brew of peppermint, horse chestnut leaves and clary sage. It worked well, but I became so awake instantly it was hard to fall asleep.

Those two both have seeds for sale. Also, I just learned that the user tommo here on DV has been growing calea for a while now, you should send him a message if you want to ask him anything about it!

I've wanted to experiment with it, but I never actually got around to it. I might still get around to it some day, though~ You should definitely report back here if it goes well!

Hehe, salvia. That's the drug I hate to do until I start doing it. I procrastinate for months until finally I decide to do it again, and then the second I come down I compulsively smoke the rest of my stash in one sitting. It's definitely a wild ride! Most of my experiences with it have been nearly impossible to explain or comprehend even just from my memory. The ego loss is really intense, I would say the most of any drug I've used.

Actually... I have some kind of lying around that's been nagging at me for a while.... >.>

      *gulp*

Amanitas are cool too, though I don't have nearly as much experience with them as I'd like. They're very bizarrely dissociating, in fact on the strongest experience I had with them with eyes open everything looked normal, but with eyes closed I could still see the room I was in perfectly but it was distorting basically the way it would've been with eyes open if I was on a classical psychedelic. How's that for odd? Definitely interesting though, I'd love to have a higher level trip on them.

Delirium to me is an extreme form of freedom. Freedom from from all sorts of logic or rational thought or physical boundaries, and from responsibilities and morals and that kind of stuff. I find the feeling of approaching delirium to be extremely exhilarating, and then the whole experience is just beyond words. It's a wonderful feeling. For me, anyway lol. A lot of people don't like delirium, but I love it.

The shipping in those sites are insane! I think I found a European site for calea, salvia and maybe shrooms. I need money first though, lol! Tonight I'm going to try the henbane ointment. Last night I used my belladonna ointment but the dreams didn't seem to be influenced by it like last time...

I will! The flowers aren't growing too well now, but it's quite cold so I think it'll be a while before my first opium embrace.

Salvia sounds amazing. Really want to try it, but it makes me nervous just thinking about it even if it doesn't last long! Do you chew the leaves? I heard smoking it doesn't work... but it's very bitter. The reason I rarely drink mandrake tea is cause it's so bitter. Bleeeh

Amanita is something I'd love to try some day. Preferably in the woods where they naturally grow! Seeing with closed eyes sounds awesome! ^.^ Sounds like a semi-oobe.

I understand what you mean about delirium... Personally the teas I've taken have only had an effect on me in dreams, not in waking reality. I think that's why I'd love to try salvia, amanita, and also iboga. Have you heard of iboga? I can't find leaves or seeds of it anywhere online, but it's basically a lucid dream inducer- while you're awake!

I've heard some really crazy stuff about salvia. One of my friends took it and after he saw himself float out of the room he could see the unniverse around him composed of flowing pink energy, then a part opened and he could see himself so he enetered into the room again and say the walls build themselves out of the energy and gradually gain colour. After hearing it from him it sounds so cool and mind expanding.

Salvia experiences vary probably more than any other drug except perhaps DMT (and maybe datura tea which I have never done and do not recommend to anyone). The only constant appears to be a feeling of deja vu as you break through. There is no way to anticipate what you'll experience on the other side. It typically seems senseless, though the deja vu gives it an underlying vibe of significance. I think DMT has a greater potential to teach you though. Hell, it's called the Teacher Plant.

I've heard some amazing and transformative experiences from datura tea. I've never heard about a feeling of deja vu from salvia, interesting! But every experience does seem to be unique (aren't they all?). I've wanted to try DMT but the making process seems complicated with hard-to-find ingredients.

(Thread hijacked in favor of awesome hallucinogenic drugs)

My experience with friends who have taken datura tea seems far too risky for me, which is saying something because I'll take practically anything you offer me, most of the time. Part of my prejudice comes from the fact that scopalamine comes from the same plant, but most of it comes from people I believed could handle their drugs, until they tried datura (though I did not observe any permanent effects). I wouldn't try and claim just because scopalamine is derived from the same plant, therefore you shouldn't do it, but speaking personally I am extra cautious because such a dangerous drug is extracted from the same tree. I also simply believe everyone should feel safe to try DMT, salvia, mushrooms, mescalin (San Pedro, Peyote), DXM (cough medicine) and LSD, which is where I begin and end my list of drugs I believe is safe for everyone regarding hallucinogens. I've tried others but that's me experimenting, I can only back the drugs I've listed with evidence; these drugs will probably not have any long lasting negative effects, and you'll probably learn a lot from the experience. There are plenty of other things I've tried but I'd find it irresponsible to list them. Though, speaking outside what I consider strictly hallucinogens but also contains a spiritual element, a little ketamine, ether or MDMA never hurt anyone. I'm still unwilling to attempt datura at the moment. Though I'd probably take a few good swigs were the flower presented, that's simply my attitude regarding drugs. The ticket presents itself and you pay for it, then take the ride. But I'm not willing to advocate that lifestyle, either. Maybe one day I'll die, or worse take scopalamine. I prefer to at least attempt a criticism of drugs beyond the "well I'd do it so you should too" attitude. I believe people more cautious than I should at least gain a report back before what they probably believe is an impending overdose. I believe people can learn a lot from drugs. Or... sorry...what does the thread call it? "Plants for self-exploration" yes, that's right. And I'd like people to know that you have nothing to worry about regarding DMT, salvia, LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, mescalin (San Pedro, Peyote), DXM, ether, ketamine or MDMA. There are certiainly precautions to take but those precautions are listed everywhere on the internet, and you should definitely do research for yourself. But for God's Sake, do drugs. What else are you here for other than to explore? Just be safe, know what you want from life and know what ticket you're willing to pay for. If you want to be an example to show others what not to do, then do it. If you have higher goals, then be more cautious, and do enough research to realize none of the drugs I've listed will inhibit your ability to follow your dreams. Or if you realize maybe some of them are far too outside your comfort zone to try, then take that into account, as well. Just know what you want out of life and fear nothing, know you own the choice and make that choice purely because you know what you want. And when you know exactly why you make the choices you make, and exactly why you want to make the choices that you want to make, there is nothing left to fear.

Not at all irrelevant! And I agree! But I have more interest in plants/drugs than I have experience.

I recently heard that lovage tea is great for prophetic dreams, but it seems not many are aware of this plant. I like the name too, 'lovage', lol!
