Hmm, not sure if I can explain it properly. Basically you have to really, and I mean REALLY wonder and question things. You can't just say "Is this real?" then you pinch your nose and say "I can't breathe. This is reality."
You have to think about it, and really consider "Why can't I breathe? What if this is a dream right now? Does this scene look normal, and what makes it so? What am I doing, and why?". The reason why you should do this is because in dreams, everything seems normal to you. Mermaids can be flying in the sky and you would still think it's normal. That's why it's important to build up awareness. When you are more aware of your surroundings as well as yourself, it is easier for you to realize that there's something wrong in your dream scene. You would be more aware, and thus know that mermaids don't exist, and they especially don't fly! This is where reality checks come in. When you have realized that something is up, that's when you do reality checks in order to prove that it is, indeed, a dream. You can do physical reality checks to test if everything is working and behaving the way they should, like breathing even when your nose is pinched.
Patience is very important, it might sound like a lot of questioning. (It's not really -- it only takes a couple seconds to wonder about your reality) But you are trying to integrate a new habit in your life, so it will definitely take some time to get used to it.
I hope you comprehend what I'm trying to say, lol I'm not the best at explaining :D
