Why would you want to exit out of a dream or a nightmare if your LUCID? when your lucid, you can bascially do anything. So why not fight whatever it is scaring you in your nightmare?
I would suggest trying a mantra while you're awake during the day to remind yourself that you are faced with something scary, try to remind yourself that it's a dream, and you would prefer to face the nightmare, rather than wake up.
Best example I could give... people in dreams pointing guns at me always woke me up. So during the day, I would think to myself, "I don't feel pain in my dreams, I would like to face down whoever's holding the gun and see what getting shot might feel like." It came up, I got lucid, commanded the character to shoot me, and it felt like a small and annoying headache :P Nothing terrible at all :)
Being chased is another scary dream of mine, so lately I'm trying to remind myself to realize this as a dream sign and to ask my attacker why he is chasing me. I'd like to know what my dream will tell me, then :)
yeah. recover from the nightmare and go back to sleep. you should be someplace else, and if you held onto consciousness, you should also be lucid. don't DEILD, though. that will put you back in the nightmare
I dont mean that I have problems with nightmares. I meant that if i can concious enough to escape from a dream could i use that as a way to get lucid? Sorry it was badly specified. And thank you for your idea's though because i can still use them.
Well, a lot of my early lucids (going back to when I was a teen) were "discovered" because of recognizing a nightmare as a dream. So yes, it certainly can be used as a method of invoking lucidity.
One problem I still have with nightmares is, even though I generally do get lucid, I find it hard to "break" from those plots. Like I'll say to myself, "Once I find a safe place, I'll take control of the dream!"
So to help you combat that potential outcome, I would suggest maybe a daytime mantra/reminder to yourself. Remember that once you realize you're dreaming to just STOP and focus on something small, like your hand. Remind yourself that whatever it is that is chasing you (or whatever) needs your attention to exist, so by ignoring it / paying attention to your hand, this monster ceases to exist and cannot harm you.
Also, doing something like focusing on your hand upon becoming lucid is a great way (for me) to stop and allow the dream to stabilize. Usually, when I realize I'm dreaming, I like to get right in there and get things done. But it's a very, very good practice to remind yourself that you'll have more time to get things done if you take a few moments and let the dream stabilize. Get a feel for what dreams feel like during this time, too. Look around. It's this part that generally tends to amaze us so much, as lucid dreamers :)
