Greetings + creepy dream

Hey, first time poster here.

I first experienced lucid dreaming about 5 years ago, but never realized it was something that people tried to achieve. Well, I found this forum a few months back and read a little, and was interested. Most interesting to me is the possibility of actually talking to your subconscious while asleep. I always kept that in mind.

I'm posting now to see if anyone can figure out what happened to me last night while asleep:

So I was standing in a room talking to someone, (pretty generic) when I looked at my hand, saw six fingers, and realized I was dreaming. Immediately I thought "oh, spin" and started spinning. I guess it worked to keep me lucid, but not exactly in control of things.

My next thought was, "hmm apparently I can talk to my subconscious here." So I said, "Okay subconscious, let's talk." This is where it got creepy.

I looked around the room and there were a bunch of people there, and somehow I knew that they all represented my subconscious mind. I was trying to be amiable, but they were all looking at me. None talked, they just stared at me...hatefully. I started to back up, and they began to follow me, reaching out.

During this time I started to feel an intense and overwhelming sense of fear and just wanted to wake up. I was trying to wake up and couldn't, which is strange. In my previous lucid dreams I could never stay asleep. I was willing myself to wake up. And I swear to you for an instant my eyes opened in real life because I glimpsed the ceiling of my bedroom. But immediately I was back in the dream and being grabbed by these figures. It sounds lame but this was actually quite terrifying at the time.

I backed up out of a doorway, with their hands still clinging to my shirt. Then I started spinning again to get rid of them.

Finally, after willing myself to wake up hard enough, I was in my bedroom. And I could still hear the voice of the original person I had talked to, sort of garbled and indistinguishable. And the fear was still there.

Then there was a sort of snap and I woke up again, this time for real.

My first lucid dream in a long time and it scared the hell out of me. And fuck, maybe I'm actually a psychopath. Does my subconscious mind hate me? :shock:

Hi, welcome to DV! Try not to let this experience frighten you off the path of lucid dreaming. Dreams are amazing and incredible complex, and not always pleasant. The thing you have to tell yourself is that things that happens in dreams, aren't real. The experience might be, but there is no way you can be harmed in any way from dreams. Unless you are very mentally unstable.

The story you just told sounds very frightening indeed, and the explanation I have for it is that you worried that something like that might happen. That small sliver of fear created a snowball effect. The reason why you couldn't wake up, was probably the same as when having a nightmare. Not all lucids can be awoken from right away, and it sounds like you ended up in Sleep Paralysis right after that, with hallucinations.

The thing I do with scary dreams and experiences related to dreams, is to try to see them as awesome (scary yes) adventures. Look forward to having them and tell other people about them. I mean, isn't it cool how everything's playing out in your head? That the brain has the ability to do these kinds of things?

Sometimes your subconscious can do some pretty strange things. Have you thought about the fact that maybe the dream was a nightmare, except you were lucid in it? There's such a thing as lucid nightmares.

And Matte87 brought up a good point - fear can cause lucid dreams to go bad. After you have a few, you'll become more confident in your abilities as a lucid dreamer and nothing will frighten you. After all, you're going to wake up sometime so you're never really stuck forever inside creepy dreams.

The first time you "woke up" sounded like a false awakening, it's basically when you think you wake up, but you're actually just in another dream. It helps to do a reality check each time you wake up and consider the fact that you could be dreaming. After all, waking up feels real because you do it every day, but you never know (as you've experienced).

Don't let this one event put you off from lucid dreaming, it's an amazing experience. Sometimes dreams just go sour and there's nothing you can do about it, and unfortunately for some people their first few lucid endeavors go along a bit like yours, so they leave the prospect behind. Keep at it and don't give up!

Sounds oddly like Inception.

I find that when I'm having a nightmare(which is quite enjoyable) and become lucid the dream usually turns neutral and i fuck every girl in sight :lol:
Keep at it and your LD's will get better and better and better.

I agree with TokkTokk, my first thought was inception; which says its just the natural way the subconciously created people react when you realize your dreaming.
I liked your post though, becuase i can relate. My past few dreams have been very similar to this, which scared the shit out of me and actually made me scared to fall back asleep.
I suggest you continue to practice stablizing your dreams, and try to stay aware of the fact that it is only a dream, so there is no reason to be scared....unless of course you are on the third layer, in which case you will be lost forever if you die in the dream.

And don't worry, this dream didn't scare me off of lucid dreaming. It just caught me off guard because my subconscious basically seemed to say "f you". But I guess its possible that it was a lucid nightmare, like Puffin said. I haven't had any lucid dreams since then, but I always remind myself before falling asleep to look at my hands.

haha, anything involving sex just wakes me up.

man i love nightmares, scary movies are good and all but are nothing compared to a good nightmare. i love the rush of adrenaline you get from scary dreams, theres nothing quite like it. your brain was probably influenced by that scene from inception.
