Well I'm not sure what you've read up on already but a good thing to search for is a dream journal (abbreviated DJ)....It's pretty self explanitory just a journal for dreams, important for recalling dreams which is pretty much considered the starting point for lucid dreaming. After being able to recall a few dreams a night then you should move onto searching for info on dream signs, reality checks (ways to determine if you are dreaming), stabilization techniques (ways to prolong LDs). And then it's pretty much trial and error...experiment with the different induction techniques (WILD, MILD, DILD, DEILD, VILD, and there are others :p) and find whats right for you.

Holy Jeebus.. I'm guessing ILD = induced lucid dream(ing)? I have a little bit of knowledge I suppose like the whole mantra thing and reality checks and whatever. So if I start keeping a dream journal with what I remember as I wake up, then dream recall is improved, then reality checks and then experiment with the different induction methods? To record multiple dreams for a single night does it all happen at once or do you wake up at various points of the night?

WILD-Wake Induced, MILD-Mantra induced (I think), DILD (Dream induced), DEILD (Dream Exit Induced...like dreamchaining I think) and VILD-Visual Induced (technially goes with WILD or MILD because it's not it's own techinique). There are several tutorials on this site which are good and can go into much greater detail than I :)
I'll try to explain the stages of sleep but I'm no expert yet so it may be off :p
As we sleep we have different REM cycles, each longer than the last. After each cycle we briefly wake up but most do not recognize it and quickly fall back asleep. So during these waking periods if you recognize them you can wake up and write down what you remember, however you'll end up losing sleep this way. My method is just to simply wake up and write everything I can recall. Either way it's important that you write them down asap, some prefer not even sitting up :p Because once you get up and move around it's easy to forget it all.
Reality Check, DILD, and Dream Signs would be the best starting place
I think most people's first LD is a DILD, however it seems some people can DILD easier than others, and others can WILD better than others. All those techniques are just variations of DILD and WILD.
Also MILD is not mantra induced, it is mnemonic induced lucid dreaming, that is when you use a mantra basically to assure yourself you will have a lucid dreaming.

I suggest looking around the Dreamviews Wiki for a while, and having a look at the different abbreviations used around the forum. LD is lucid dream, RC is reality check, and so on. You should research reality checks, and DILD first because for many people, it's considered the easiest technique. There's a tutorial in the wiki, under "DV tutorials".
I also have a DILD guide in my signature, if you're interested in checking that one out too. It focuses on awareness which is extremely important, and discusses it more than the DV one.
