Is this normal?
Hi, I'm new to all this, but last night I had an experience which really puzzled me.
I had a false awakening, where I thought I was trying to get to sleep but my husband was tickling me. I tried to kick him but couldn't move, I tried to tell him to stop but I couldn't seem to say anything. When I eventually woke I realised I had been dreaming. This has happened before, but I had been listening to an audio on my MP3 & the strange thing was that there was no break in what I was listening to. What I was listening to in my dream just carried on when I awoke.
Is it normal to be able to listen to something external whilst dreaming at the same time?

Yep.
Sometimes if you fall asleep with just a TV going on in the background it can have a direct effect on your dream.
Your physical ears are still working while you dream.

Absolutely! I fell asleep watching something on the discovery channel once (can't remember what it was about)...had a dream about floods...woke up and there was a program about "the great flood" on the t.v. I have also purposely played a particular song on low volume as I slept...and trained myself to perform a RC when I heard it and became lucid (only did it once successfully, but haven't tried it a whole lot to be honest). Using an outside influence to induce lucidity is known as an EILD (externally induced lucid dream).
