reality checks and the other side?

I lost my long term partner just over two years ago, and often dream of him. Spiritulist friends have suggested that he is telling me something.
I have done reality checks in these dreams and haved passed them, when I continue to perform them eventually I wake up, often as I am just beginning to enjoy the dream. They are usually about everyday stuff, so it really does seem as if he is there, which makes it really sad for me to wake.
Do you think it is possible to connect with 'the other side' if such a place exists?

I am sorry to hear of your loss. :(

Although nothing or no one has any concrete evidence of astral projecting, remote or distant viewing or any other form of mind travel does not mean that such a place doed not exist. We just may not know how to navigate are way there yet.
Some claim they have and do.
So I myself discount nothing.
My mother passed away and I was very angry at first. But one thing that can't be taken from me are my memories of her. This is what I tell myself when I have a dream of her and encounter the feeling that you describe.

I've had dreams in which my long deceased parents have been rather vivid characters. Seemed fairly real.

One of my first important dreams almost half a century ago introduced me to the Lady Oracle of Dreams -- she opened up the trunk of an old 1947 Plymouth, it used to be the family car, that was up on blocks and removed an iron and a blanket and came over and gently handed them to me saying "A man named volont 11 years ago told me to give these to you". I was not used to figuring out dreams, but within the year I remembered that the car had originally belonged to my Grandfather who had died 11 years before. I had been given a Spiritual Inheritance. The dream had continued. After the Oracle gave me the Iron and the Blanket, she turned her head and looked at a Mountain off in the distance -- a very steep mountain of tiers and levels. Instantly we were both there, at about mid way up, the Oracle on the level just above my own. and She told me "Only those at the bottom cannot go to the top". This was sort of the Dream that initiated into Spiritual Dreaming. Was my Grandfather, on the other side, instrumental in stirring up Sponsorship for me. It might seem so. Maybe the Chinese have been onto something regarding their Ancestor Worship.
