Whenever my schedule allows for the privilege, I love to set aside the hour before I go to bed exclusively for preparing for bed, relaxing, and thinking about dreams. I will read a bit of my dream journal, start to focus my intent, and take the time to consider what I want to do when I become lucid (not if, when. confidence helps).
A shower or bath can be ideal after a stressful day to prepare for the introspective state useful to both falling asleep, and lucid dreaming. Turn thoughts away from problems, and instead ponder the potential of your mind. Think of the dreaming experience not as detached or vague, but as a defined state of consciousness which you will undoubtedly enter during the night. If you like the MILD technique you could start it long before you even go to bed.
Also, try not to put any nervous energy on yourself to have a lucid dream. If you can manage to be content and happy, while still focusing on the desired result, I believe it is far more beneficial than the impatience of disappointment if you don't get the results you want immediately.
I tried to stay away from the obvious stuff, so it largely comes from personal experience. As such, people may have equally valid, but opposing viewpoints on some of the tips above. Good luck.
chill out, read a bit of my dream journal, i usually think throughout the day what i want to do in my LD.
I like to start my night with binaural beats, whether it works or not i dont care, im getting the mental attitude that I will LD from it so it helps in a way, I will then attempt to WILD, usually failing and then either waking up and writing down my dream orrrrr being lucky and LD'ing.
good times :)
