Keeping a dream journal is an excellent start.
Having good dream recall is a key point to LDing
I'm a newb as well. I started keeping a dream journal about a month ago, and the results are right there in front of you. You'll start remembering a lot more.
I honestly don't think being smarter increases your chances....but I could be wrong. I do think that having a broad imagination helps though
Valo is certainly right. Keeping a dream journal is must. I've been lazy with my dream journal recently and as a result my dream recall has plummeted and I haven't got any LDs. :(
Another basic thing you should start is reality checking. When you're awake you should do reality checks so that they would carry onto your dreams as well. A good reality check is to pinch your nose and try to breath through. If you can breath, you're in dream.
These are the two basic things that will surely grant you lucidity sooner or later.
I don't think beign smarter has anything to do with LDing. I've got a 3.75 or so GPA in college but I still only manage to have about one LD a month, but my life's kind of stressful and I don't always have that much time to devote to it. Persistence and a positive outlook are, I believe, the two deciding factors and if you can maintain both, you'll be good to go :)
