I realised I was dreaming, but couldn't control it.

Alright, to start off I am new here, and this is my first post ever xD. I've read the topics on lucid dreaming several times, and decided to give it a shot a while back by attempting to use the DILD method. Didn't work out at all.

But yesterday night, something really odd happened.. I'll try to do my best to describe it, and I'm hoping someone on this forum can explain. I stayed up really late (or early I guess) until around 8:00 AM, and was utterly exhausted. Before drifting off into sleep, I thought about the film inception (mentioned that because I think this somehow had something to do with it). So I eventually fall asleep and dream, and I'm on campus hanging around with a bunch of people I do not recognize at all. (I do not realise I'm dreaming yet Lol) . So then I notice that this kid is smoking, and I randomly ask him if it's Marijuana he's smoking (I am a pothead and haven't smoked in WEEKS xD) and he says yes. So in the dream I'm like "I'll pay you 20$ for just ONE hit man, pleaassee!" and he offers me the joint in exchange that I tell the dean of schools to "Fuck off". Once he offers it to me, my dream self takes a hit of it and I actually started to feel high. To skip a few scenes, I decided to head to the snack bar and when I did I noticed that I was on an ENTIRELY different continent, and that's when I realised. "Holy shit I'm dreaming." So, once I realise this I get a bit over excited, but don't instantly wake up.. It's like I'm struggling to STAY in the dream, and the dream is shimmering, like a pebble that landed in a body of water. Then it just shimmered until I couldn't make out anything at all, like my vision was completely distorted. Eventually the dream continues on, and I'm a soldier in Afghanistan. o_O And I completely forget I'm dreaming, no control at all. So I want to know WTF happened? I'm disappointed I got so close, only to forget/fail. ): So disheartening.

Welcome to DV! It's very common that dreams destabilize when you're new to Lucid Dreaming. Most likely you wake up because you get excited or worry about doing just that, or the scenery can change or you lose lucidity. Don't worry! It happens to the best of us, and you'll get better and better with each time you get lucid.

Now, it's not as easy as it sounds to get lucid just like that. Expect to fail alot in the beginning, but it will gradually pick up. Whenever you get lucid next, try just to go with the flow so to say. Don't think too much about the fact that you're dreaming and you'll be able to stay in the dream longer.

Rubbing your hands is a great way of stabilizing, activating any of your five senses works, but touch and sight is the most effective ones. Also make sure you check out the other techniques there are.

If you got any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks a lot for responding so quick, bro. And yeah, I think you're right, I was extremely worried that I was too excited about the matter and I'd wake up, guess that's what got me in the long run. xD I'm going to try a lot harder to Lucid dream now, it sounds really awesome from all of the experiences I've heard about and I MUST do it. I mean, some of my dreams have been REALLY awesome without being lucid, since they're so vivid. lol But to actually be in control would be amazing.

Matte basically covered it but I just want to say Welcome . Are you planning on creating a Dream Journal? I recommend that you do, it will end up helping you a lot. Also have you noticed the Wiki Section of Dreamviews? It has some really helpful tutorials you can read and get you on your way on having more lucid dreams!
      Good luck!
