Still trying to wrap my head around RCs.

So, around the forums I see posts similar to:

"RC checks should take some thought, it's not just mindlessly doing them."

      "You should genuinely question reality."

But... I'm not exactly understanding what that means. How long should that actually take? A couple seconds, maybe a minute? And whenever I do RCs in waking life, I already know I'm not dreaming because I remember everything up to that point and the RCs fail. Also, how can you accurately measure "awareness" in a dream?

I think after you remember a few dreams it becomes a lot easier to judge these things, It sounds to me like you are on the right track.

I'm no expert with my 2 lucid dreams but this is the way I see it. Your dreams have a way of making you believe that they are very much real so you have to develop the habit of questioning reality.. even if your awake. You may believe that your awake and remember everything, but if you do a RC there then your more likely to do one in your dreams. It's a matter of habit.
As far as length of RC, Ive bin doing them enough to be thorough.. (for example I count my fingers instead of just glancing at my hand)

It's saying don't look at something and go "ah. that's real."

Seriously sit and think about it. Look at your hands, then look at text, think about your memories, look back at text, think of where you are versus where you live, look at text, look at hands, figure out if you're in a reasonable setting, then back at text. Then stare at one thing for ten seconds.

Not the exact order, but that's generally my reality check list.

Reality checks rarely ever randomly happen in dreams. They are used more to confirm it after you gain suspicion, which is done through hjabitual awareness and questioning, not habitual routine.
