Are you keeping a dream journal? If this was your first attempt and you didn't remember, don't worry its not a big deal. Heck, some nights i dont remember anything at all. It'll come with time, just keep doing what you're doing and be sure to write down anything you remember, even if it's just one word.
I usually go to sleep thinking to myself "I will remember my dreams" and I don't know if it really helps or not but its worth a shot :)
Make sure you get a full nights rest. They say 8 hours, but you could pass off for about 7. But this has to be your normal schedule and not just one night.
The other 2 posters before me are both right. Try telling yourself before bed that you will remember your dreams. And don't just say it, you have to mean it. Also about keeping a DreamJournal, it's a must! Especially if you're new to the whole lucid dreaming thing. Good luck!
Another good technique is to set an alarm to wake you from a REM period. Preferably after about 6 hours, so you've had some good deep sleep already and your REM periods are getting long and close together. Waking from a dream pretty much ensures you'll remember it.
Also, when you're laying in bed trying to remember (as you said in the OP) it's important to have the right attitude about it. Don't get mad and think "Well dammit - I can't remember anything!!" - That will ensure that you don't. You have to maintain an open-minded, non-judgmental attitude.
Here's a few tips for you.
- Write down your dreams as soon as possible.
- Sleep 8+ hours.
- Use an alarm that doesn't shock you too much when it goes off.
- Lay in your bed after you shut your alarm off/wake up, close your eyes and just try to recall your dream(s).
Hope that helps :D
Oh! oh oh and when you wake up, try to remember to not move. Any movement is distracting your brain and fogs your memory. The first time I tried this actually, I had a DEILD (dream exited induced lucid dream) which is a form of WILD.
Also, when you wake up, your mood explains a lot. For example, if you wake up feeling happy and your not sure why, you most likely had a good dream :)
okay cheers guys :) ill try telling myself tonight ill remember.
Edit: power went out and i decided to sleep for an hour or two and tried telling myself ill remember and it worked :) was only a couple words but its a start cheers guys :).
Lay in bed with your eyes closed and don't move. Your brain thinks you are going back to sleep, so it turns all the dreaming ports of your brain back on, including your dream memory.
