Became aware in dream then went into sleep paralysis!

      Hi,

I have only started researching on lucid dreaming recently. I have been reading a lot of things etc, but I haven't been putting anything into practice yet, i.e. I haven't been doing reality checks yet or anything.

The other night at about 4am I was in this dream where I was lined up in the bank. All of a sudden I was floating above all the people and floating around the room. It was at this stage that I realised I was dreaming and said aloud in my dream "This isn't right I must be dreaming!"

Anyway I don't know if any of you have experienced sleep paralysis before but I awoke from the dream and went straight into sleep paralysis. I was expecting that the first time I became aware in sleep I would wake up but I didn't think I would go into the paralysis state!

I have had sleep paralysis a few times only in my life and the last one was several years ago. Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this and if it could be caused by waking up too quickly from a dream or something.

      Hello eloura,

SP (Sleep Paralysis) is very common in many people and it can happen for many reasons. I bet almost everyone here has gone through it. SP is where you are not fully awake yet from a dream that you have had. You are on the bridge between dream and reality. If you weren't in sleep paralysis while on the border you would combine dream and reality.

      Best regards ,

      Hello, eloura

I, personally, don't remember a point in time where I woke to find myself in full SP. I have heard of many people who have, though, and it's normal so don't worry about it. You just happened to wake up before your body did, which can happen when a person becomes lucid, especially if they get excited about it.

Some people use SP to possibly go into a lucid dream, because since your body is still asleep you're halfway there I'd recommend checking out the WILD tutorial if you're interested in that kind of method.

      I hope this was helpful.

      Hey there,

Just to add to that - if you don't know what it is, SP can be a frightening thing.
Seems like you weren't afraid though.
There's cultures that believe that it's a naked female demon that sits on your chest and suffocates you (That oppressive feeling of not being able to control your body + breathing easily creates the illusion)

It could be worse, one of my friends in the state that u are almost dreaming and the awake part starts to stop breathing... and he cant move!.. he begins to try screaming to people that are in the room with him but he cant do a thing... until he wakes up a few seconds again... thats gotta be a ugly experience..

Thanks guys. I think I might do some research into trying to go lucid while in SP so if it happens again I might be able to make myself go back into lucid dreaming.

I used to be very afraid of SP, until I did some research and found out what it was. It very rarely happens to me, and usually only just after going to sleep or just before it is time to wake up.

My worst experience with SP was when I went to England a few years back. I had bad jetlag and I was very sleep deprived and I think that bought on the SP. Anyway I had like 3 in a row. I would have a SP episode, force myself awake, then feel really drowsy and go straight back into it. In one of these I saw the grim reaper sitting on the end of the bed and I must say that freaked me out as it seemed very real! I have had other SP kind of things that seemed very real where I would actually get up and walk around the room and even down the hallway and back etc and when you force yourself out of the SP you could swear that you were actually doing it!

Welcome to DV's Eloura Awesome name by the way.

I've expereinced Multiple episodes of SP also. Thats not cool at all. For Me its like frustrating, Because it usually happens directly from a Lucid Dream. And its ususally a Lucid Dream that Im having the most fun in. But its cool I understand its all nature. Welcome aboard. see ya around.

Thanks. I got the name Eloura off the movie Willow that came out years ago. The baby in the movie that was a princess her name was eloura and it has always stuck in my head as a really cool name. Widh it was my real name!

Yeah the multiple SP thing is definitely NOT cool. it's horrible as you are so drowsy and you can just go straight back into it, you have to FORCE yourself to get up just to break it off!

Sleep Paralysis is also a part of the WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream) technique.
The basic idea is to stay concious until you start dreaming... And since your body "goes to sleep" every night (otherwise you'd be doing/trying to do the same things in waking life as in the dream) it is a part of the process...

      hey,

I'm pretty new to this myself (the website that is). I usually wake up in SP after having a Lucid Dream. It used to really freak me out! Since I've been researching it on the site though, I actually kind of enjoy it now, just because it's an experience. Some people see things or hear things while there in this state as well, which can be kind of freaky. This has only happened to me once though, but in a way, I kind of want it to happen - it would be yet another experience
