ok so last night i had a weird dream, i woke up im my dream and i did a bunch of reality checks.. i pinched my nose and i could dreath normaly i looked at the clock and it said "Time" i got all exited because i new i was sleeping and i thought i was having a lucid dream but i wasent.. i was having a dream about having a lucid dream i had no control and i was not lucid. i was just watching myself do all the things i want to do in a lucid dream like fly and change the dreamscape. very disapointing when i woke up and this has happened more then once. so how do i make reality checks work if i do them while im sleeping and i still dont have a lucid dream? this is confusing and very frustrating. any tips would help thanks

Sounds like you didn't actually have a lucid. A dream about a lucid has happened many times to people, it sucks. :/ In my opinion nose pinch is best and easiest reality check. It's hard to say how to become in control if your watching yourself. Try to become first person then gain control? If you COULD do that, then you should have no problem! But it aint very easy.. So just keep doing reality checks and hope for a better dream scene! Hope I helped at all..!

If you were aware in the dream, as in feeling yourself mentally present at some level, you were lucid. But if you don't think you were lucid just because you couldn't control anything, know that control has nothing to do with whether you're lucid or not - you can have non-lucids about telekinesis, but lucids where you can't control anything. So it's really up to you to make a judgement call based on that.
If you don't believe it was a lucid, at least your mind is getting used to the notion of LDing - after all, the stuff you've learned about it has just transferred into your dreams! I often have dreams about being lucid, but it's only part of the dream plot, and I'm not aware on any level (even after 2 years of LDing I get them).
To kick off lucidity and actually being aware in the dream, you have to be aware in real life. When you do your reality checks, don't make them a habit. And by "habit", I mean not just doing them whenever you feel like it, and without really considering whether you're dreaming or not. You have to question things at some level, and look around you. The action of doing an RC won't cause lucidity so much as the actual mindfulness will.

What techniques are you using, and how do you go about doing them?
Like puffin said, it's all about applying reality checks to real life in the right way.
Any questions, just ask :D
