I know that all over the site everyone talks about the first R.E.M. stage of sleep occuring after 90 mins of being unconsious... I'm just wondering if there are exceptions to the rule, there has to be... don't some people get to REM quicker than others??? and another thing is i've had countless naps that only lasted about 45-60 mins long and I can remember a dream i've had during that time period... does this differ from person to person???
Yes, you are correct, everyone is different. If I am roused within a few moments of falling asleep, I will also remember dreams and you can have episodes of REM within the cycle, especially when something disturbes your sleep and causes you to awaken slightly.
I also remember some very long and vivid dreams within the first two hours of sleep, at this time, the sleep cycle model suggests that I should have been in a weak REM state for only a few moments.
Predominantly though, most people follow the 90 minute cycle. Think of it as a general rule instead of an absolute truth :D
I believe I've also heard that it's possible to have dreams in other stages of sleep besides REM. I don't know much about it, but my guess would be that those dreams would not be as vivid and would likely be harder to remember.
I think another factor is whether you are "sleeping" or "napping". I believe that your subconscious is aware of whether or not you are intending to sleep for a long time, and adjusts your sleep cycles accordingly. If you're only planning on a 30-minute nap, you're not going to want to go into the normal 90-minute cycle where you would be in a very deep sleep stage at the time you want to wake up.
Again, this is only based on anecdotal evidence, and a little personal experience, but it makes sense to me.
Yeah I agree with them...I typically get most of my LDs when I nap during the day. My naps are usually about 1.5-2 hours long and I am usually dreaming within 45 minutes of laying down to nap.
I've never heard that your brain adjusts your sleep cycle like that, but it makes sense to me TygrHawk. ;) I do know that your brain is definitely in a different state of mind when you go to sleep at night which is why you go through these REM cyles...than if you were just taking a nap for a little bit. I think you can dream anywhere, anytime...even within a few minutes of falling asleep.
I'm fairly sure that one entire sleep cycle is 90 minutes. That means you achieve REM somewhere within this period after going through a couple of short stages....
yeah nina.. I was going to say that's actually the only time i've ever had an LD is through a nap, or if I wake up in the morning for like 5 mins then go back asleep, thats when i will have an LD.

Nope definitely not playing tricks on you. I know alot of people who have LDs during naps. I am like you...I have about 70% of my LDs during naps...about 20% during the early morning hours when I wake up like you said...and about 10% are DILDs...where I realize that I am dreaming in the middle of the night and become lucid. It's great that you are able to naturally LD like this when you nap. Maybe I'd be a good adopter for you if you are wanting to learn more. ^_^Quote:

I just had my third LD during a nap today. It was the best LD I've had yet. The first one happened like a year ago, and the second one was earlier today. Yep, my second two LDs in the same day, weird stuff. Maybe I'll have my fourth tonight! :huh2:
HEY CONGRATS!!!!!! That's awesome man! Napping LDs seen to come naturally to some...aren't they great!? I just lay down and say "ok time to get lucid" and about 45 minutes later I'm in lucid heaven. I wish you many more to come. :)Quote:

i'd like to start getting more LD's, ive had about 5 since joining the site, well i've had about 5 full LD's, and like 3 that i just woke up right away from :P
Dreaming takes place in all the stages of sleep, not just REM. Statisticly speaking, in normal people who dont think about thier dreams, it is most commen for them to expreince the most vivid and memorable dreams during REM. BUt for us, we are focused on dreaming,, thus we are more aware of our non-REM dreams.
I've stated this before.. but I don't feel that REM stages are always set. It depends on when you last slept, and your state of mind.
Some nights where I've been really hyped about LDing, i'll drop right into one within 10 minutes of sleep (mind you, this is not a nap, and is at night).
And not to mention my best lucids have always been at around 1AM-2AM, not in the late morning. So i really don't belive REM periods are set. I do know however you can make it easier to get into them (like the WBTB method).
