I've been able to ld since as far back as I could remember, also. I started off by learning how to recognize when I'm having a nightmare, and came up with a way of waking myself up whenever I felt I really needed to. And that evolved into being able to recognize nightmares, and manifesting weapons or powers to defeat them. I thought it was normal also, and that everyone did it, accept that when I would tell people that I could do it, everyone always looked at me like I didn't have any idea of what I was talking about. LOL. But since I learned it had such a study behind it, I've had to start training again, because I lost some of the ability over the years. I'm getting my skill back again, though.
Wow, that's a lot like me! I can realize that I'm dreaming usually if it's a nightmare. I have been using lucid dreaming, in a way, to wake myself up when I realize. That was before I'd even heard about LD, so this is all very interesting to me! I also started doing those "reality checks" at an early age... Once in a while, I'll just look around and ask "who, what, where, when and why?" about everything. Just question everything and compare it to normal life.
Now I realize that instead of waking myself up, I can experiment with my dreams. That's so cool, and I can't believe I never realized it! (Although I have wondered what it would be like if I "accidentally" had a lucid dream... before I even knew what a lucid dream was! Now I know I can induce a lucid dream at will.) I only found out about LD yesterday!
Anyway, your descriptions started like how I started out as well, so I thought I'd share my experience too.
LD is awesome...
