Newbie, still trying for my first LD..!

Hi there to all you LDers out there, I come to you as a newbie, still trying to achieve my first lucid dream. I have started my dream journal, I have just started practicing ADA and I have been doing reality checks for a while, also WILDs (I know this is unlikely as a first LD), but it gives me a mindset at bed time that I want to lucid dream.

I am envious of all you "time served" lucid dreamers and I can't wait for my first experience, I have felt a little disheartened as of late due to the fact that I have been trying for quite some time now, but I just read the post by KingYoshi about ADA and I have been refreshed towards my thinking. Anyone who even just read the post may have noticed that as you read, you became more aware, it was a really strange feeling, a buoyant sense of awareness came over me and I was excited. So I'm going to keep up the ADA and along with other tips and tricks I learn on here or elsewhere, I hope to get there very soon.

Any advice or pointers to posts that may be relevant to anyone who has yet to achieve lucidity would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to becoming an active member of your forum, it seems like a veritable fountain of knowledge and I will be splashing in on a daily basis.

Welcome Nicho! It's great to have you here. Congratulations on taking those first steps! You can learn a ton here. I certainly have.

I was lucky enough to get my first taste of lucid dreaming by accident, but my second LD took a couple more months of solid work figuring things out. If you put in the work and time, remain patient with yourself, and always keep learning, you will succeed.

One of the hardest things for me was tackling the hobby of lucid dreaming all on my own without much of a support system. The folks on this site were a tremendous help in sharing with me, encouraging me, and inspiring me as I learned how to lucid dream.

Hi Nicho, I am fairly new to this site myself (loving it thus far, hope you do, too). While I am not entirely new to lucid dreaming, since I was into it years ago, but I am coming back to it after a long time.

I don't remember any more how long it took me the first time around before I achieved lucidity, but I do remember that even once I achieved lucidity I had some dreams where I was lucid only for a brief moment, and other dreams during which I was barely aware of my dream state and had no control, but with practice and persistence I got better and better at it - so my advice, don't give up. It may take a lot of effort at first, but trust me it is worth it because lucid dreaming is awesome. A related peace of advice make sure to count even a moment of awareness as your first lucid dream - as a moderator on dreamviews named gab recently reminded some of us in another thread, make sure to reward your mind for a success in recognizing a dream no matter how briefly, and don't send it mixed signals of disappointment when you get progress no matter how small.

You say you are practicing ADA. I try to practice a method that is not quite as demanding as ADA but which has worked for me in the past. I call it "looking for the weird", and of course this method is not unique to me. It is the idea of questioning reality regularly based on anything weird you may encounter, and then you do reality checks based on anything weird. This method involves evaluating anything weird as to whether or not it is too weird to be waking life. This method is less demanding than ADA. The reason why I am suggesting a less demanding method is that often a reason for lack of success in achieving LD is trying too hard and stressing out too much over it, and so if you switch to a less demanding but still effective method it may help.

Another important factor is expectations: you need to be convinced that you can do it in order to succeed at LD. I know you can do it - do you? You need to expect to succeed.

Finally, it really helps to immerse oneself in thoughts of LD, to talk and read and write about it, to become part of a community and to make the goal of achieving lucidity an essential part of your life. That's where dreamviews can help you. Welcome to DV!

Welcome to Dreamviews!

I would suggest participating in one of the DVA (Dreamviews Academy) courses. It's a good way to track your progress and an easy way for the Dreamguides to give advice when needed.

I'm fairly new to this experience, but the help I've received from the Dreamguides has helped me immensely. Keep motivated and stay diligent with your practices and the results will follow.

Ok, I've been sifting through the massive database of advice you have here and I have learnt quite a few things already. I've read the WILD tutorial by Sageous, simply because that's where I jumped in, I understand now that I may have set my sights a little high. My bad.

I will be checking out all or at least most of the tutorials available on the site and I can't wait to get started.
So, I have a question, can one be too confident that lucidity will happen.? People keep saying that you must set the intention and truly believe that it will happen, well I've got that down, 100%. I honestly believe it will happen, I just don't know when, can it be detrimental to attaining lucidity to be too confident, in that each time I dream, when I wake I am disappointed that I didn't notice. My dreams are some of the weirdest, so I've been told, (and vivid) of anyone I've come across, I'm sure this will change now however, as being part of a community of dreamers surely will show me how mild my dreams really are, we'll see. Hence the disappointment at not knowing what was so obviously a dream, albeit after the fact.

On a side note, last night/this morning, I was woken by my dogs running up and down the stairs, I think, I'm pretty sure I was woken with SP. I thought someone was coming up our stairs, but I had no motor functions to move. I now realise I have experienced this sensation before and just passed it off as a dream, not really knowing what it was. God was it scary, I coped quite well with it, tried to use it to initiate a lucid dream etc, but to no avail, however it has excited me.

I'll stop rambling, I'll start a dream journal on here when I get a few more experiences under my belt.

Just my personal opinion - I think being over confident could be a detriment to lucid dreaming. If you convince yourself nightly that you WILL be Lucid or you WILL recall your dreams and you have a few days in a row with no success, that overconfidence could possibly turn into doubt.

I don't see a problem with your current state of mind though. It's understandable to be disappointed if you don't have recall, or it takes you a while to achieve lucidity but don't be too hard on yourself. Just stick to your techniques and know that with practice and diligence you will become a good lucid dreamer with time.

If you want to be Lucid dreaming easily, I think the WILD technique would work great for you.

Just incase you didn't know this, WILD is the most powerful technique known to man. It also creates the most vivid dreams.

You should try that technique. (You don't have to but I think it'll be a good one for you.) Or you can choose the technique that suits you the best. The technique that suits me the best is actually Wake induced lucid dreams.

Go to Forum Actions submenu and Edit Profile, and fill out as much as possible.

Go to Community Hall menu (further on top of the page for explanations of what you get hall points for. Being ambitious I zeroed in on that quickly. LOL
