I came crawling back

Hey guys. I'm back.

I've had like 3 accounts here over the past several years. What generally happens is, I get all jazzed up about lucid dreaming, and then I start out a DJ, and then I burn out after a few weeks of no success, and then I forget about this who lucid dreaming thing for a year or so.

Most recently I've been serving an LDS mission in Russia for the past couple of years. Didn't have much time for thinking about LDing then, but I'm back and ready to give it another shot.

So instead of just posting "welcome to the forums," how about some tips on how to pace myself and not get tired of the DJ thing...? :D

Hi there. I suggest you write up a specific list of goals you want to achieve when lucid. Some things you REALLY want. Watch movie clips or music or art that encourage those goals so you stay motivated. If an attempt doesn't go as planned, remind yourself that it was a learning experience and adjust your technique. Note down your attempts in your dj and evaluate your attempts so you get the most out of them. Read read read and surround yourself with things that encourage you to be in the lucid mindset.

DJing can become tiring, but think of it as chronicling another life you get to experience while you are sleeping, and that you want to remember as much as you can. Most people don't even get the chance or the will to experience this so be proud and stay motivated! :D

I found that for me a change in attitude really helped, looking at it from a different point of view: instead of being frustrated with slow pace of progress, I focus on all the positives of what the effort to become lucid has brought into my life: I am now more self aware, more focused on self improvement in different ways inspired by lucid dreaming (improving my memory, day time awareness, sleep habits, exercise, etc). I have decided to be patient. I know I shall be lucid, but it does not have to be tonight, though I would be very excited if it were, but I won't be disappointed if it does not happen immediately.

Yeah, that's definitely a good way to think about it. I think another thing that will help is my new voice recorder - now I can just say my dream into it whenever I wake up in the middle of the night, and type it the next morning when I'm not half asleep.

Voice recorders help a lot. I can't survive without my, just the thought of having to write when I just woke up...no thanks xD

Remember that, like all habits, it gets easier as you progress, and at some point it becomes mainly automatic. That means you just need to survive a month or two :P

I tried voice recording, didn't work for me, and I felt like a was more connected to my dreams when I wrote them down, and I often got them in my conscious memory a lot faster, I don't know why, but I have always loved writing my dreams down, instead of anything else. Just didn't work for me.. Would be a lt easier if it did, or if I did that from the start.

It's funny, I just came back to dreamviews today..a quick look at my profile will show you I've had a similar on again and off again relationship with lucid dreaming. At first, lack of success drove me away, then actually success with WILD and the accompanying sleep paralysis eventually got to me a bit. Now I'm back, hoping to focus a bit more on dream signs and reality checks, to see if I can avoid some of the problems that have irked me in the past. Not much good advice, but just know that you're not alone!

I once heard that people differ in the way they learn: visual leathers, auditory learners, and more tactile learners. When I heard that I thought that maybe I am a tactile learner because to learn I need to write down something or highlight it at least. Maybe you learn similarly to me? I too cannot imagine wanting a voice recorder, but I can understand that it does work better for other people.

Hey BHuij, whats up! I was the same exact way. I would get all excited about Lucid dreaming and after a month or so of no success something else would get my attention and I would spend less and less time thinking about and practicing LDing until I forgot about it all together. I've learned though that if it doesn't work out right away it's alright! Because like with any other skill or goal your trying to achieve it usually takes a lot of time, practice, and effort to succeed. I relate it to bodybuilding... I can't just go to the gym for a few weeks and think I'm gonna reach my goal physique. I have to work at it everyday whether I'm feeling up to it or not. Because at the end of the day putting in work WILL produce results, and me likey results! nomsayin? You gotta keep at it if its something you really want! Here some things that really help out since coming back to the site. Hopefully they'll help you too!

Lucid Dreaming Fundamentals is a really good thread that helped me out a ton. Just check it out!
Also I combined All Day Awareness and Naiyas MILD Technique and had my first LD on over 4 years! Plus it only took me ONE day of ADA practice!
I would also suggest keeping a dream journal. No point in having a lucid if your just gonna forget it. Which I almost did with that last lucid. (I didn't remember until I was asked by my gf if I had a Lucid! :P)

So in short, work on memory, awareness, have confidence, and stay positive! If you do all that then you'll be on your way to a lucid in no time!

Uhh, I just realized that you wanted tips on how to not get bored of DJing....Well... this should help with LDing none the less lol! PEACEEEE

Hey there, I have the same problem as you to some degree, I get all excited about LDing and am determined to record all dreams every day, but eventually life and multiple bad sleeps in a row take over and I end up drifting away from it. I was wondering what would work for me to keep me on track, and I thought that for any of kind activity that requires commitment, the message I always hear is to buddy up with someone, that way you're accountable and have to answer to another person, which means you'll be more likely to stay on track. Hit me up if you want to team up and keep each other on track. :)

I agree! It certainly helps me keep running every day by having a running partner. I think this could work as well with dreaming as well, as each person could not only make sure DJs are being filled out, but also that other goals are being accomplished.

Exactly. I'm very visual and tactile in how I learn, I need to write things down, draw diagrams ect. So yep, I'd say we are pretty similar in how we learn.

Hi, welcome back whoever you are! I sometimes get lucid sickness too, but I overcome it by simply forcing myself to DJ. I DJ at school, because I found my free time lacking. DJing really helped me get back into lucid dreaming (and keep me with it). I copy them to DV later, although I have 100+ dreams to still copy onto here :( . You just need to remind yourself that LDing isn't like IRL, and you will not get tired. Also remember that a good LD at night, means an even better day.

It's amazing how many people return to DV. It's even more amazing how the return of one veteran will prompt others to suddenly pop out of the cracks.
