I'm a newb looking for advice on inducing SP.

Hey guys, I learned about LDs from my brother about a month/month and a half ago. We were talking about SP and how we use to get it as a kid, and then he explained to me how it's pretty much the holy grail for OBEs and LDs. I was skeptical at first because I didn't think something like SP in all of its horribleness could actually benefit me in some way. Although i've had close to if not exceeding 100+ SP events in my life, not one time have I experienced anything like an LD or OBE.

I have SP occasionally(all upon awakening), about 1 or more per month, but I cannot seem to induce SP on my own accord. I've tried laying still waiting for vibrations or a hypnagogic hallucination and I get nothing. I try every night and also when I take a nap during the day. I've also tried WBTB into SP but still nothing.

My question to anyone reading this is "should I try to skip the SP process entirely?" and if so how can I skip the SP process while still inducing LDs and OBEs?

Remember that your goal is to have a lucid dream, not to enter sleep paralysis. SP may or may not happen, but either way it's a means to the end, not the end.

It's sounds like you want to try the WILD technique, which you can find many tutorials on here. The key thing about WILD is that you need to attempt it at the right time, with the right physical and mental state. You should only attempt this in the middle of the night, after waking from several hours of sleep already. On top of that, many tutorials will describe relaxation and visualization techniques to get your body and mind into the right state. If you just focus on SP, you'll not find a good success rate.

And as you're just starting, you can also benefit from looking into DILD and related practices (dream journal, reality checks, ADA, mantras). The best way to learn is to start with a well-rounded approach to build the right skills and habits.

Ive been doing about 10+ RCs a day, really questioning whether im dreaming or not. Also I tell myself through out the day that I WILL have an LD tonight, but im not sure if I actually believe myself when I say it. Im hoping to have a DILD but I would rather master WILD because it would be a gauranteed LD and i've read that WILDs are probably the most vivid LD you can have, and to WILD you pretty much have to go through SP dont you?

I've been doing the RCs for about 2 weeks straight. I can usually recall atleast one dream per night, last week I recalled 3 dreams a night, but each time in my dreams i've never once thought that I was dreaming. Everything I do in my dream just feels to normal to me so its hard to question it. I'm assuming my dream sign is water since I literally have some form of water in every dream I have, and even though I do RCs whenever I see water I still dont question reality in a dream when water is present.

I've tried Jeff777's Free-falling WILD technique for about 3 weeks and I either lose concentration and fall asleep to quick, or concentrate too hard and can't fall asleep. I've quickly realized when I WILD not to focus on my body because I start to worry about swallowing or itching or moving and then I start to do all of those things. Although i've only been trying to LD for a little over a month i've had some pretty vivid hypnagogic hallucinations, but I never seem to get to the point of paralysis or the stage of transition from reality into an LD.

It seems almost impossible for me to make a distinction of when I should concentrate and when I should relax when trying to WILD. Many people say they just sit back and let there HHs play out while they watch and then form their own dreams from the HH while transitioning into an LD. How do I go about doing this without falling asleep or losing concentration. In other words, when I start to have HHs how do I stay relaxed but focused and just "watch" my dreams unfold? What does it feel like and what should I be feeling when I "watch" my HHs and how do I transition into a LD from those HHs?

1. SP
I hate to tell you this, but by no fault of your own, you have been wasting your time. SP is not something to strive for, as sisyphys pointed out. If you want success, you should just forget anything you ever read about it. SP is a disorder. Normally you may get it 1-2 in your lifetime, regardless of if you are lucid dreamer or not. You can not induce SP, as it is something your body turns on after you start dreaming. And it most certainly is not something you wan't to induce, wait for or go through when you trying to have LD.

The problem is, that years ago, all sensations that you may get as you are falling asleep/WILDing, were labeled SP. But only tiny portion of them may be SP. Normally when you WILD, you get all kinds of sensations/or none at all. But those are all just you noticing your body falling asleep. http://www.dreamviews.com/wake-initi...mystified.html

2. Staying still
Another misconception you may find in older tutorials is, that you have to stay perfectly still. And you can't swallow or even scratch. That's no longer the prevailing concensus.

3. Lack of belief/lack of questioning reality
Doing RCs is great. But they are only a vehicle, that will help you practice and raise your awareness. It's not enough to RC mechanically. Most important part of RCing is the awareness part. When you ask yourself if you could be dreaming. The correct answer always has to be "Yes, I could be dreaming". Then when you RC, you have to believe that it will work, because you could be dreaming.

4. Lack of mental preparation
It's not enough to get to hypnogogic state. That's because you don't alway get the hallucinations - HH. But you can enter LD even without them. For that, you have to do your mental preparation. (Above in detailed WILD link.)

5. WILD is not hard. But without proper preparation, it's near impossible to do consistently. That's why DILD is recommended to start with. That will teach you almost everything that you will later use for WILDing.

So read up, and please ask your questions. We will be happy to help. But you have to believe us when we say, that road to LD does not go through SP. Happy dreams:alien:

And for Primal - there is even one more problem I think - as he says, he had around 100 SP episodes - knowing what he was waiting for.
He had them, when they usually happen, after waking up - and terrifying ones.
After my little research also into medical literature - it is not really a disorder, when without other symptoms.
But it also is not something desirable, surely - there being tips on how to deal with it as a problem on the net.

I had one such awakening SP as well - not nice.
Then later - some years ago - I watched the in my eyes very questionable Nick Newport Lucidology videos - to once more get a LD.
He really confused me with his SP and roll-over-signal talk.

The lack of success with this SP and roll-over stuff caused lucid roadblock for me for years.
And I think, there might be intention behind it - because if the videos were enough - why buy something after all?

It might be obvious to people doing it regularly, how to really RC, what the answer is, or what to evoke - but it was not to me.

Sweet, thanks everyone for the tips and advice. I'll just stick to DILD for right now and if I wake up in the middle of the night i'll try to WILD. I've just been hung up on my brother telling me about SP because its the only thing I can relate to and the only thing i've experienced. Loss of breath, can't move, can't speak...all of the symptoms without any of the hallucinations. I would really like to have a spiritual awakening at some point in my life and I hope LDs will do the trick.
