First Lucid Dream -- Interrupted!

I had my first LD a couple weeks ago. I guess it was a DILD because in my dream i was in this weird room and then I suddenly became lucid. When I realized this I was excited and just started running around. I ran across the room and into a black wall that sent me falling into blackness, but then the dream was over because my father woke me up.

Anyway, I think I;m having trouble discerning what is LD and what is waking up. Before this time, whenever I thought I was lucid i would wake up...I guess its because that often happens: you usually wake up when you realize its a dream. I guess this time I was able to stay in the dream somehow, until my friggin dad woke me up. Anyway, yeah, lucid dreaming is the most strange/awesome experience ever....but I think that's my main problem, staying in the dream, cause 'waking' up inside my dream is like some sort of trigger to actually wake up, and since it actually feels like waking up, i do wake up. Anyone have any tips on staying lucid?

Oh yeah: when i was lucid, the scariest part was that I felt like I was doing everything that I was doing in the dream in the physical world as well. Does anyone know about if lucidity actually makes you move around a lot in bed, etc.?

Many people find that everything will turn dark when they first start practicing Lucid Dreaming. Its normal as it will pass soon.

Most memorable Lucid Dreams happen in the Later REM stages which occur near your waking point. The theory is that you become Lucid easy in these stages because you are on your way to waking up within 90 mins.

When you realize you are Lucid, try spinning around to stabilize the dream. Also, look at your hands and study them. Hands are usually weird so it keeps you focused in the dream. Also, try not to get excited when you realize your in the dream.

You should not be moving around because your body is paralyzed when you sleep. You may be able to move a bit towards the end of the dream if you are waking up in the real world as you leave the dream...

i am just starting out, and find that almost half of my approx 20 lucids involve darkness. a trick i used in my last lucid was to imagine a lighter in my pocket and use it to survey my surroundings.

as soon as i lit it, i saw 3 policemen walking towards me, and this triggered 'daylight'. *shrugs* it might work for you too...

and i've also found one of the most difficult parts when starting out is prolonging the LD. the 'staring at my hands' method has worked beautifully.

as far as moving in bed, the common scientific concensus is that chemicals inhibit your muscles from actually moving while dreaming.
this is the basis for alot of the WILD techniques. you wait until you can actually feel this sleep paralysis setting in, and keep your mind awake as your body 'shuts down'. this is also why dream-state sleep is specifed as REM (rapid_eye_movement) sleep- as the eye muscles are some of the few still active while dreaming.
