You start by doing reality checks when you are awake. Once you get into the habit of doing them while awake, hopefully you will start automatically doing them while you're asleep and dreaming. Then if your reality check fails, you will know you are dreaming, and then become lucid (hopefully).
im still a little confused. Could you give me some examples of reality checks and what you do to practice them? Thanks a lot! :mrgreen:
Well, I'm like you, I can't ever be enough in the habit of doing RC for them to happen in a non-lucid dream. I have to already suspect that it's a dream before I'll do an RC. However, everyone is different, and a lot of people apparently can train themselves to do them without thinking, and therefore do them when in a non-lucid dream.
My favorite RC is to pinch my nose and try to breathe through it. If you can still breathe through your nose when it's pinched shut, you know you're really asleep! :D
Also, I will often try to levitate off of the ground (since I can always fly in my dreams). Obviously if you can float or fly, you're dreaming. :P
There's a whole big list in the Reality Cheks Tutorial if you want to check that out as well. The pinch-the-nose-and-breathe RC has always worked for me, but everyone's different.
