Well, that's the reason to keep a dream journal. It's completely normal for a dream to fade away and for you to forget it entirely as the day wears on. But as long as you've written it down in your journal, you've preserved it. There are detailed accounts of dreams in my dream journal that I've completely forgot about until I went back through the journal and re-read the entry. If I don't sit down and record my dreams as soon as I wake up, I forget them altogether with not even a recollection of bits or parts of the dream. It's just gone.
I can't say that your memory of early-morning (or middle of the night) dreams will improve, but that shows the importance of recording dreams in a journal.
So keep up the good work with the dream journal! Hope that answers your question. :)

This has been my experience also.. Its good to go ahead and write them down as soon as you wake up becasue you tend to forget many details if not everything if you wait..
