If this is the case, you are more likely to fall asleep without remembering a dream, because you aren't as close to REM sleep at this point in the night.
It's best to try it after five or six hours of sleep, and to have an idea of what you want to achieve when you go back to sleep, and a definable point at which you will be able to tell you are dreaming.
