The simplest thing you can do to begin to get the hang of lucid dreaming is:
begin keeping a dream journal, and aim to remember your dreams every night. As you become more proficient, you should be remembering two or three a night.
When you are recalling dreams regularly, it's time to begin reality checking.
At regular points throughout the day, ask yourself if you could be in a dream. You don't have to do it out loud, you just have to think it. When you perform this reality check, be open to the possibility that you could indeed be dreaming, and look for things that prove you are indeed awake.
Techniques for this include looking at your hands; if they change shape at all, or you find you have extra fingers, chances are you are in a dream.
Another technique is to look at a digital watch. If the numbers seem peculiar, or the time changes rapidly, you are probably dreaming.
If you perform these checks regularly through the day, you will eventually find yourself doing it in a dream, and realising you are dreaming.!
Also, some people find that after they join DV, they have their first lucid dream a short time after. Some people find it takes a while.
The main thing is to be patient, because techniques can sometimes take a while to work, as you are training your brain to recognise something it doesn't ordinarily look for.
