Keeping Ld'ing To Yourself

The 2nd semester of college started for me yesterday, and an interesting piece of conversation came up.
The class was Philosophy and Film, and we were talking about the first movie we were going to watch, which is The Matrix.

The topic of the Matrix was about dreams and what not. The professor in the midst of what he was talking about said, "How do you know you're not dreaming right now? We all know how real some dreams can get. You could be dreaming right now and you wouldn't know it...(a reference to the virtual world created in The Matrix). The class just got so quiet, like everyone was thinking to themselves, "I COULD be dreaming right now..."

I wanted to go Well Professor Doe (of course not his/her last name), "I know I am not dreaming right now. How do I know this? Well, I can look at my watch, look at the time, then wait a couple seconds and look back and see that the time has not changed. I could also plug my nose and breathe through it, or I could probably even fly.

Of course I didn't say that, but has anyone encountered some times where they just wanted to splurge out about LD'ing, but decided not to?

yeah, and I've tried it...and most people look at me and go 'huh?'

You know, you could have mentioned that in your class, you might have got a good conversation going!
after all, your lecturer brought it up, so it shows they aren't a skeptic

Yeah, I think that, with all the inappropriate times to bring up lucid dreaming and expect a positive response, you missed a good opportunity.

although I can't agree with Oneironaut enough, I must say that this has happened to me before too. this happened about a week ago. We were told a relaxation techniqe (a very bad one compared to the ones found on this website) and all I wanted to do was yell out a few of them and that they could be used to induce a lucid dream. Also we were talking about REM, and I wanted to talk about it, but seeing as how I am in 8th grade and I don't want to be an outcast for all of high school, I kept my mouth shut. (our teacher knew almost nothing, only that we "Played a movie in our head" I feel pity for those without knowledge of LD's)

But in the end, unless you put out some hard core facts, (mostly) no one will believe you. I have told my closest friends (and my cousin) but they all just act like I'm crazy. That's why we should all be thankful for this site and all the users.

actually this is ironic the subject of dreaming came up in my computer class amongst a few people who sit behind me and i actually refferred him to this site and told him it would definatley be the most interesting thing youll ever read in your life and he thought it was pretty cool.

I typically don't share much with the off-site world concerning lucid dreaming, or dreams in general for that matter. Most individuals simply cannot conceive of a place where mind and material interact with one another in a perfectly balanced symphony of experience. I don't mean to imply that said individuals are capable of consciously understanding their skepticism, but it is there nevertheless. An extremely strong sense of religious fervor or an incredibly analytical mind incapable of acknowledging that which falls outside the realm of immutable scientific models are conversational time-bombs best left unwound.

I'll stick with Dream Views for now.

It's weird... For the longest time it was the biggest secret for me. All I wanted to do was tell everyone I knew, but it felt sacred to me. Like the world wasn't good enough to learn the truth. But look at me now. I'm spreading the word every day.

I cant keep my mouth shut about it, its almost a crime, how could you keep something so wonderful to yourself? I try and mention it to everyone "lightily" Just to see if they are closet LDers and never talk about it.
But when situations like that come up i cant resist making a comment or a argument, even though people are so close minded it normally ends up making me look like a fool.

I've been telling a lot of people about it lately. Friends, Family. My mother thinks Im weird that Im so into it though. Probably because shes always thought it was entirely normal to everyone, even though I know that a lot of people find it New Agish.

I've posted about it in many places, and talk to a lot of friends about it at school. Im going to be starting an after school group on it too (and me and Sprout will help each other out as hes teaching a class on it :P ), and am going to see how many people I can inform and spread the word too.

Some people look at me weird, some just don't care, others hang onto my every word. Its different for everyone.

I enjoy talking to anyone who will listen about lucid dreaming. In fact being friends with a lot of people who have friends, who have friends, etc. I have a reputation in a few schools.

I am a Seventh-Day Adventist. My dad is a SDA pastor. I enjoy being a Christian and find that lucid dreaming and Christianity can live in harmony. Others (my parents for one) do not think so.

They started out trying to figure out what it was from me. Then they said they didn't like it and it sounded New Ageish or something. I went on dreamviews when they were in the other room and a few other things like that. Then eventually they actually banned me from any lucid dreaming resources and talking about it to them or anyone else.

I went to my sister's school (a boarding academy) and found 3 guys who found it very interesting. One i had known already, one was a new acquantince, and the last a new acquantince who had had lucid dreams every night with complete control (And I mean complete! No limits!) since the age of 12. We talked about lucid dreaming virtually the whole day. We tried to talk to others, but most everyone else shunned us. Then i came home and kept in contact with them.

I got into trouble a couple weeks later for something i regret and changes schools to try and get a fresh start. I was in a private SDA school before and moved to another one in a larger town. Being as small as private schools are, the principal wanted to talk to me personally about joining the school. He specifically mentioned my lucid dreaming reputation. He told me not to talk about lucid dreaming to anyone in the school! He couldn't have came down harder. I agreed (apprehensively in my mind) and i was accepted into the school.

I found out later that the teacher for 7th and 8th grades had had a discussion in Bible class with her kids about lucid dreaming. (Someone had told her about me introducing it to those three kids at the boarding school.) She had a strong opinion that about matched the principals. She apparently told the kids that it was evil, lead to clairovoyance and other "satanic" things, etc.

I think a few of the kids figured she was being a little overdramatic and were fairly interested. It seemed to me that they were hinting that i should talk to them about it (discussions popped up a bit more than you would normally assume and then they'd look to me like i should contribute something). Finally, one of them came up to me and was like "What is lucid dreaming?" I told her that I could not talk to her about it at school, as I was banned. I told her to get onto msn and i would explain. She did and I told her.

This happened with a few other people and eventually all the students in the school had their idea about lucid dreaming. (In this explaining to a few people, I found that another person who has lucid dreams every night with almost full control.)

I am still banned from talking about lucid dreaming, but it seems like the students are accepting it as just one of Andrew's hobbies. The most recent event that relates to lucid dreaming was when i was doing a book report for school. I had read plenty of books and could do it on any of them, but i couldn't remember much of them and i needed to turn the report in that day. The only one I could vividly remember was Stephen LaBerge's EXPLORING THE WORLD OF LUCID DREAMING (which is a very good book by the way). I crossed my finger, hoped he wouldn't give me an "F" on it, wrote it, and turned it in. I got 50 points out of 50, and he never commented me on it.

This was a bit extensive, but i needed to get it out somewhere since I am shunned, ignored, or shushed by most people. (I am happy thought that my sister has shown some interest. She is in college and is planning on majoring in psychology.)

wow, funky, talk about a bad rap. Lucid dreaming is satanic!? Those teachers must've been ultra-conservative. That sucks! It's just your imagination. 'newageish' hahaha, that sucks.

No kidding, it's not like we are going to offer them tainted Kool-Aid after...

I find that most people want to know how they can LD after I tell them that I can. I usually cant explain it though, things like WILDS are really hard to describe to people that have never had a LD, so I usually end up sounding like some sort of crazy person, haha.

Some people just don't understand. They have never experienced things like this, so they say that it either doesn't exist, or that it is satanic or evil in some way. It is sad, but sometimes, it's better to keep it to yourself.

My mom thinks its "evil" or "opens doors" But thats never stoped me :)

When I told my Mom about my Dream Journal and Lucid Dreaming, she immediatly went to the topic of LSD, pot and other drugs and I got a lecture about drugs once again. My dad on the other hand is kinda intrested, while my brother just likes to read my dream journal.

One of my best friends had been keeping a dream journal since October 06, he told me about it and I got intrested. I have him to talk to about LDing so its pretty sweet.

Nah but see here's the interesting thing here, (I believe you completely missed what exactly he was saying)...see you define reality as a place where you can NOT achieve things that you could in a dream, however many times these limitations are there because your mind places them there (Trust me, everything in this world is NOT as it seems)...of course, no matter how hard you try and overcome this, you still have the definition of reality engrained into your being, and therefore can't overcome these limits no matter what you "Think you believe" in otherwords, saying "ok I get this, now maybe I CAN pass through solid objects" isn't going to suddenly make you be able to fly, because of course your mind can't forget the definition of reality and therefore, you have defined in this "reality" that you CAN'T pass through solid objects. Anyway when you are in a dream, you know by *experience *testimonial of others *clinical research *this site etc, that you CAN achieve whatever you can think, so in this complex of your mind, you ARE able to achieve these things.

Anyway whether or not you read all that, here's the conclusion, and the point.

When you dream/lucid dream you are generally aware that you are dreaming, so the defintion of "dream" pops into your brain, and suddenly you can do whatever you think you can

When you THINK you are awake, EVEN IF YOU ARE DREAMING, you still have the general mindset of "reality" at the forefront of your mind, and because of that, you can only achieve what you have defined as reality.

So what he is saying, is that you COULD be in a dream now, so real, that even if you try to convince yourself it's a dream, you can't because you THINK you KNOW that it's reality, and no matter how hard your conscious mind tries to comprehend that it could be a dream, your subconscious is still screaming "reality", and therefore all the rules of reality apply...

so really...who knows, your whole life could be a dream, but no one would really accept that since the world you spend most of your time in, your mind automatically accepts as "reality"...maybe lucid dreams are just a subdream of your dream of life? who knows.... :shock:

I'm Prespeterian Christian, and my friend Will is total Athiest. He gets in verbal fights with kids at school about god and religion. He belives souly in science and that dreaming is nothing spiritual at all. I'm starting to see everything with scientific conclusion. What I'm trying to say is I like the explaination on "mindset of reality" its a bairer ment to be crossed. Kinda like in the Matrix.

well to be honest, i've seen some REALLY crazy stuff that basically defies the laws of physics, and it really gets you wondering about what the truth is...it's a really interesting concept, trying to take your mind out of the equation, and perceive a "true reality"...anyway as for the whole "god" issue, to be honest I used to call myself an atheist, but basically I think that

a) God is a load of bullshit
b) At times science can be exactly the same thing

I think that in this world, there are many forces that lie hidden that people don't perceive unless you TRY to, which is interesting because the more you learn about "influential, transcendential, etc." people they seem to have unlocked this "ultimate consciousness", but anyway yeah, I think there are a lot of unseen, unfelt forces that interact on every aspect of this world, both seen and unseen, and by training your mind to pick up on and influence these forces, you can achieve some pretty insane things.

All speculation, but I try my best to explain the mysteries of life :P Anyway I know it's something that will never be accepted on a mass scale considering that people are too focused on the whole organized religion like cattle, but still I try to focus not on what the mass believes, but the truth.

And secondly - they have Adventurer SCHOOLS? Whoa - that's incredibly scary. Personally, I'm against church schools of all kinds, but that's kind of beside the point of this thread.

Okay, this kind of makes me angry. How the hell can a school forbid its students from talking about certain things? That's limiting free speech. My advice would be to just talk about whatever you like, and if they get pissy, threaten a civil rights suit at them, and remind them firmly that they don't want to make a big deal over something that may come back to bite them in the ass.

It's good to hear that even kids can think for themselves and sift through the shit people try to brainwash them with.

That's awesome. I did a bit of first-year psych last year, and, psych and dreaming really fit together. Talk to your sister about it as much as you can. If she's studying psych, chances are she's far more likely to be intelligent, knowledgeable and understanding. She might be a good, sane ear to talk to.

Honestly, it's not difficult for religion and science to coexist in the same universe. God doesn't have to snap his fingers to make things happen, that's what physical laws are for--certainly an invention only one with infinite power could conceive and execute. I refuse to believe that He would place us into a world that we could never comprehend. He wants us to prosper and become more than what we are. He wants us to grow. That, truly, is "living for Him," something churches the world over profess is the most important aspect of Faith.

I don't understand what all the fighting is about between the two fronts. People just have a need to be combative I suppose.
