Trouble with Wild

Ok, well last night I tried a wild. I tried one before I went to bed, I dont think I got that close. I'm getting a blue color floating around an pictures of eyes. To tell you the truth its probably me just wanted them to be there. Well, then I tried one after waking up 5 hours later. I had the same thing, just colors but they didnt go farther.

BUT, I think I know what my problem is. When it comes to sleeping I can do it. But how the hell can you sleep while thinking about pictures or something? I mean, the only way I can sleep is by thinking about nothing and sleeping. How do you guys do it? OR Do you fall into a certain state, and that triggers you to sleep.

Suggestions are appreciated! If i'm missing anything just ask!

Actually I have never used the Wild technique but my dreams have been enhancing with the two basic things I have don’t. My dream journal shows all the improvement. In the beginning I could barley Jump high enough inside a dream to get away. Know I am an almost ammeter Super Man.


I don’t really know what you’re talking about. I don’t really know what you’re trying to ask me. And I don’t think you know what you’re asking. So I suggest you practice on reality checks and making a dream journal. The two are very powerful, as bad as anyone may think it is, it really works. Usually when I get up in the morning I ponder about whatever dream I just had. As soon as you wake up from you’re dream relive it a second time before you get out of bed. Doing so signals to you’re brain that you care about you’re dreams. It also helps you remember them better.

While WILD'ing, do you actually fall asleep when you begin a LD.

ALSO, if so, how do you sleep while picturing things in your head. I mean, usually for me to sleep I got to let me mind wander and think about basically nothing.

the whole thing of WILD is to stay consious while your body falls asleep. you are not supposed to try and go to sleep, but you are not supposed to try and stay awake either. Its all about balance.

those blue colors you saw, are called hypnogogic imagery. Dont judge how close you are to completing a WILD by them. the images are quite random.

Ok, good. One more fallow-up question though. Will my lack of sleeping effect my WILD? I mean, will it not let me sleep by telling my body i'm not sleeping?

I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean that if you havn't had sleep in a while will that affect you having a WILD or do you mean that you won't be able to sleep and WILD because you know you aren't asleep. It sounds like you're a little confused about WILDs. I'll explain the best I can. Basically you lay there still and passively watch what floats in front of your eyes or whatever you will start to have bits of random dream type things and eventually you will be in an actual dream and know that its a dream because you've been conscious the whole time. Just be a little more clear with your question because it seems a little ambiguous.

if you think about it too much it will do...
you basically want to fall asleep, but keep your head active enough to realise it, it's kind of hard to explain, for me it just feels like your waiting for it to happen and eventually it does

I mean more like. If I know I won't be able to fall asleep or I know by thinking while I try to sleep I won't be able to fall asleep, will I still be able to trick my body to thinking I am.

Also, I always feel my body twitching in random locations. I cannot control it, everytime it does that, does it know im not sleeping?

ok you need to stop thinking about that stuff, cause its gonna stop you, just count in your head, thats what I do, like 1 to 100 then start again. Don't think about anything else, just count, if you mind starts to wander just keep counting and it'll stop (although mind wandering is real common). So just count and try and ignore all the twitches and other shit going on,

Ok, another problem was I was trying to do this during the day, so yeah, it would of been really hard. I think last night while I was getting really tired and trying to fall back to sleep I was going through WILD a little but I didn't know it.

Tonight will be the night I have a LD:)

The only problem is i'm a scaredy cat when it comes to dark, so I don't like keeping my eyes closed cause I get paranoid. I'll get over it soon though, I guess I gets something out of LD then =P.

wait so you sleep with your eyes open, thats creepy cause an old friend of mines Russian grandmother used to sleep with her eyes open, real strange cause they could never tell if she were really sleeping or not

Just curious, I'm going to try the counting method right now but, how often successful are you guys at WILDs while just going to sleep (without sleeping first)? What is the major differences to doing so besides rememberance?

What I don't quite understand is how the body enters REM (I believe it does at least) during a short afternoon nap, but then takes 4-5 hours to enter REM when you go to sleep at night. Why does the body differentiate these two times of the day for REM? At what point in time during the day when you begin a sleep does the body finally push the REM greater into the sleep? Is it simply proportional to the time of day when you begin the sleep?

Sorry to flood the thread with my questions but, would caffeine like in an energy drink before bed allow for a more easily achieved WILD, since it is harder to sleep?

You don't need REM to dream though. As far as I know, we pretty much dream all the time, not only in REM. Its just that during REM our dreams tend to get more vivid and more lifelike, but it can happen outside of REM too.

Anyways, as far as WILDS go, I haven't had many myself. I can count the amount of WILDS on one hand, actually. In the few times I did manage it, it was usually a matter of being tired enough, and placing myself in a position that I cannot easily fall asleep in (for me, that's on my back with my head straight). I then let the hypnagogic images come (the images and sounds that you hear and see right before you fall asleep), and consciously try to explore them. If for instance I heard the sound of a cow, i'd try to image seeing a cow, standing next to it, touching it, experiencing how the fur feels. Then I'd see an image of a tree, so I'd walk from the cow to the tree, try to image the grass beneath my feet, how it feels, and so forth.

Eventually I'd get deeper and deeper into this 'half dream state' and if I don't fall asleep (which unfortunately usually happens) there suddenly comes a moment when I realise I'm not longer imagining touching things, seeing things, hearing things, but can actually touch them, can feel the texture under my fingers, can smell the grass, etc. That's the moment where I know I've gone from the half dream state to full WILD, and am now dreaming. By that time ofcourse, I've long since stopped experiencing my actual surroundings, like my bed :)

I tried to WILD last night by counting by each exhale I took. Well, I just barely get into the hypnogogic images. It took me a while to get comfortable. It seems like I just want to stay wide awake while I'm trying to focus on the counting. Then my mind wants to wonder off the counting. I finally saw a large vague image of Abraham Lincoln's face appear after trying for a while, but seeing this broke my concentration and I again felt like I was just sitting there with my eyes closed and awake. In fact, as far as I can remember, the hypnogogic images always cause me to awaken since they cause an exitement in my mind. I guess I will just keep trying until I progress.

Yeah, thats the same thing that will happen to me too. You need to practice and get used to them and it won't be such an excitement. Today, I was wilding and what I did was I thought about nothing and 10 seconds later I was starting to feel different. I dont know if it was because of entering my dream, but it was deffintly different.

To be honest I'd try what redrivertears said. the only time I managed to WILD was when I was tired and I tried somthing similar to what was said, like visualising things physically. I started to feel vibrations but ignored them and kept visualising things, then eventually the visualistation turned real.

Indeed, Ill try it again tonight. Last night I got lazy and just went back to bed. I'm going to try it before I go to bed, and a WTBD.

yeah, I think another good thing about being tired is that your gonna be less likely to get excited over it, cause youll be too tired

You have to find the balance between focusing and relaxing... once you find that, you're good to go :banana:

Ok, I found a very good Technique, VILD, that will keep my mind occupied doing things and its actually fun.

VILD... that's the one where you incubate a reality check into your dream, right?

i just wonder....like what kinda time are we talkin for this to happen...

the closest i've been to one of these is i just laid there...focusing on relaxing each and every muscle in my body...no music (which is not usual for me)...and i see colors....purple and yellow alternating. so im like okay that's the hypnagogic action goin on...don't focus on it...cause it will make me fall asleep...im feelin all the muscle vibrations but im staying concentrated on not falling asleep. all this stuff is happening for like 30 mins and i start to get discouraged cause nothing is happening...and then it just felt like a trap door opened up underneath me and i started falling. and i was like alright something's happening im excited. and even though my eyes had been closed and i'd been seeing black for quite a while, after i had slowly stopped "falling" i was seeing completely black but had the sensation that it was 3D. that i was in a solid black room. So i tried visualizing a grass field or something equally simple...and like major extreme pressure on my shoulders and back started happening and i freaked out and woke up.

ever since then i can't get anything going and i just don't think im focusing on the right thing or im expecting it to happen too fast or somethin. but for whatever reason i cannot recreate the "falling into that room" again or anything of any significance. i don't really know what im asking for other than like a time-period in which this should happen or maybe if someone notices me focusing too hard or not hard enough or somethin...maybe a new technique?

In my experience, as limited as it may be, technique will get you right on the doorstep of the WILD world. You can even knock at it. But that nice sleepy feeling is the key to opening the door. I can get sleepy during the day, because I spent two and a half years working the night shift at Home Depot, and I had to learn how to sleep in the day. That's probably why I'm completely screwed up with insomnia now. And you are totally conscious at the moment of going WILD. It's completely unlike becoming lucid during a dream. It must be experienced to comprehend. Really.
