When you sleep, you alternate between two main types of sleep. Non-REM, and REM. In non-REM, your brain is more inactive, and doesn't really dream, and in REM, your brain is about as active as when you're awake, and you're dreaming. In WILD, you have to stay conscious through the non-REM sleep, until you enter REM and begin to dream.
When you first go to sleep, the REM periods start out short, and they get longer throughout the night, and when you first go to sleep, you go through a fairly long non-REM period. This means that if you want to WILD at the start of sleep, you have to wait longer, making it much harder to reach REM, and when you do reach REM, the REM period is only about ten minutes. And even then, you're far less likely to remember it in the morning because you'll have another 7 hours or so of sleep before you wake up for the day, during which you're far more likely to forget it than if the LD was a couple hours before you wake.
However, if you wake up about four hours of sleep to WILD, you are at a point in the sleep cycle where you have less non-REM sleep to sit through, the next REM cycle will be much longer, and there's much less time in which to forget things, which is why people generally advise against WILDing before sleep.

Well, I think what he said is probably correct. I only sleep in one to one-and-a-half hour intervals, so I probably only ever experience the lesser WILDs. I try to chain as many of these intervals to gether as I can. But it does give me many opportunities to experience lesser LDs and WILDs, although I have a seperate issue with the latter. And I get to recall many bizarre dreams, which I really aught to start writing down.

4.5 hours or 6 hours into sleep is a good time to do wilding because your
dream cycle is a lot longer like 45-60 minutes.
If you wait at least 30 minutes before going bake to bed you will increase your chances of becoming lucid by 15 to 20 fold. According to laberge.
a question im not quite understanding..
when this wild or wbtb methods, you try to wake up
during non-rem sleep? and fall asleep when
the rem sleep starts?
so if i woke up 5 hours into sleep and i was dreaming..
i should try to wake up earlier?
if you wake up during a dream that is ok. you will probably fall back into rem quite easily if you dont stay up to long :)

I believe that the way it works is: when you wake up during your rem period, it is put on hold until you fall back asleep.
This is why for WBTB it is suggested that you sleep for 5 - 6 hours[6 hours is exactly when your 4th dream cycle begins] and then stay awake an hour and then go back to sleep and you will be sleeping right into your dream.
