Sometimes when I'm falling asleep I can hear people talking and sometimes screaming and it scares me back awake. I don't see anything like I would in a dream though. Other times I jerk myself awake with these sounds. Is this normal?

No, not normal at all... lol.
Sounds like you would be WILDing(But your not)
Sound like hypnogogic hallucinations, which are hallucinations that happen at the edge of sleeping and waking. Most people here only ever experience them when attempting to WILD, but for some people they happen when they're falling asleep natually. Hypnogogic hallucinations are not harmful, or indicative of any greater problem.
Actually, it's perfectly normal, and I (and many others) get it all the time. It's called hypnagogia, they are hallucinations that we get while transiting from wakefulness to sleep or vice-versa. Hypnagogia is a helpful indicator that lets you know that your body is about to fall asleep.
Oh yeah, when I was just a little kid, as I was trying to go to sleep I would see a white background and it would sound as if a thousand violins were playing a group of notes in perfect harmony, with just enough high notes to keep me relaxed, but on edge. The noise gradually grew quieter and quieter until I could just barely hear it, and then they would all BLAT, but still in harmony. Now, I'm pretty sure it was some intence HI and sound, but oh man, it would jerk me out of my relaxed state really quickly.
