Veni Vidi Vici!

No, this is not a success story. "Veni Vidi Vici" is the only thing I can remember dreaming the other night. Not why it was said, to whom, or where. Just those words.

My question is, does anyone have any techniques for recalling dreams when you're out of your element? I mean remembering if you're sleeping somewhere else, someone interrupts your normal sleep schedule, or you have to get up early and rush around?

My dream recall was strong when I first started this, but two weeks later it has dwindled. Thanks!

Hey WhiteVeins!

Okay, well sleeping somewhere else can always have an effect on your dream recall, i have experienced it myself alot, my advice to you is that you try and adapt, try and be as comfortable as you would be if you were in your normal environment of sleep. If there are external noises and sounds, get a pair of noise cancelling headphones, listen to some music, or you could just use the headphones to cancel out any sound, seriously it will help you get to sleep alot easier and leave you uninterrupted, another factor is change in light, i find that a good way to stop all changes in light is to get a sleep mask, they are very cheap and affordable and will keep your light levels fairly constant. The better you sleep the less stress you will have which means it should be easier to recall dreams. When you wake up, try and jot down any details you remember, it will work, you just have to believe it to. Even the tiniest detail like "Veni Vidi Vici" will help towards building your recall I hope things get better for you, if you have anymore questions please do ask!

Thanks Lucid Seeker. I did write down "Veni Vidi Vici." Every little bit helps. I think I'll invest in a sleep mask!

Hello WhiteVeins,

I had the exact same experience when I first started to try to recall my dreams. In the beginning I could recall several dreams per night, but then after a few weeks it dwindled off to nothing. Then after a few months of lacking motivation I started again. The same thing happened, but this time I persisted and tried to remember as much as I could even if it was very little. Gradually, my recall improved over the next months, and now I usually recall at least two dreams per night and sometimes as many as seven or eight. You've already demonstrated that you're able to recall your dreams, so I think that it's only a matter of motivation and persistence.

Thanks Thor! I remembered 7 dreams last night! For some reason I kept dreaming about Kurt Vonnegut . . .

Edit: Is my avatar too big? There so much empty space in my messages.

Another point to be made is that you should try to recall your dreams anytime you awaken. You may be able to remember a dream when you're interrupted during the night. If you don't try to at that time you might completely forget them come morning.

Here's a technique that you may want to try if you haven't already done so. Sometimes I awaken in the morning and I can't remember a single dream. In those cases I say to myself: "Show me the last dream I had!", and then I try to let my mind go completely blank. Typically a dream pops into my mind after maybe five to ten seconds. This method has proved extremely reliable for me. I'd say it works in more than 90% of all cases if I do it shortly after waking up. And once I recall the last dream, I usually recall several others preceding it.

If you're looking for a good sleeping mask, WhiteVeins, I'd use the "Hearos"; I got mine at Walgreens, and it comes with two earplugs and some "relaxation cream" which is just moisturizer, I think. (I don't use the cream...) Anyway, they're really cheap; only $2.50-$5.00, depending on if they're on sale. They work REALLY well.

Actually, Clarity, a memeber here on DV recommended them first, so if you do buy and like 'em, thank her!

As for general dream recall, I don't know exactly how much you know already, but things that help me are:

~If you don't remember anything at all, keep trying for at least ten minutes. I cannot count how many dreams I've forgotten as a noob because I falsely believed you have to remember something within 5-10 seconds...
~Sleep a little more than usual, if possible, at least at first. This little kickstart REALLY helps things when starting out.
~If you're in a rut, but USED to have great recall (which seems to be your case) waking up just once in the night seems to help. It doesn't have to be a WBTB, although it can be. Just wake up; it resets the REM cycle, thus making dreams easier to recall.

Hope I helped.

It's like working out any other muscle, the more you use it, the better you get. If you have to get up early, get up earlier to give yourself time for recall. Someone interupting you sleep cycle may actually help from time to time.
