Why is this?
After I saw the movie "Waking Life" a few years ago, there were a couple times that I tried the trick of looking at printed text in a book or newspaper and saw it didn't make sense and realized I was in a dream. I don't think I had much control after that and if I remember right, I just woke up. But I never tried any of the other tricks (I think they are called RC's here). One is dimming lights. I can see how my brain might not be able to produce something as complicated as a page of printed text, but why wouldn't it be able to do dimming lights? I've heard of people doing some outregeous things in there dreams so it seems strange that dimming lights is not an option.

You might be thinking of turning lights on/off. For some reason light switches don't work very often in dreams. A list of reality checks can be found here http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ead.php?t=4470 if you would like to know some other options. I hope this helped!

Yes, thanks. It just seems strange that lightswitches won't work. I wonder if a DC can turn a light on or off. I've watched TV in a dream but I don't remember ever turning one on or off. I wonder if electricians get frustrated if they dream they've wired a room but they can't turn on the lights when they test it.

It all depends! A light switch could very well work in a dream, or it may not work at all. It's just that A lot of the time things don't work in dreams the way your expecting them to. malfunctioning devices is a common occurrence. but there is no rule that says something won't be able to work.
