Hi. I'm new here.
I just stumbled upon this site yesterday, and I have to say, it seems like it will help me a lot.
I do, however, have a question.
I do have relatively good dream recall, but. Assuming it's not a lucid dream, aren't all of your dreams essentially self-conscious, so you wouldn't have any control? And if that's the case, how are you supposed to do a reality check IN a dream, let alone stop to consider it?
Also...to keep a dream journal, should I be waking up every time I have a dream or something? Because, as I said, if I have no control over it, I can't exactly wake myself up.

Howdy, and welcome to DV.
To answer your first question, the idea of questioning reality is that it becomes an action that is completely integrated with your daily routine. In other words, it becomes a habit; waking habits tend to manifest in dreams as well. Eventually, you will habitually check reality every so often, thus becoming lucid whenever you do.
For the second question, it really depends. Most of the time I do not wake myself up and record one or two dreams in the morning, as during the school year I need all the sleep I can get. Alot of people, though, do wake up at regular intervals during the night. Although you need not "wake yourself up" per se, an alarm clock will do just fine.
Hope this helped.

Okay. Thanks.
I'm fairly confident that I can activate it within a week or so, but I have a feeling that the RC's will be the part that is going to be the struggle.
So, basically, if I consistently do reality checks, say...every hour or so for the next week, I'll start to do them in my dreams?

Just make a point to do a reality check everry time you think about dreaming or sleep. the random element to RCing helps it to spontaneously appear, other wise you'd have to find a clock (which is a good way to RC)
Welcome to dreamviews!

Okay, I can do that.
When I do it, though, do I scrutinize? Like, say I look at my hands. Should this be a quick check, like..."I still have five fingers, they aren't enormous, and they're not purple, so I'm not dreaming" check, or like should I stare at my hands and take in as many details as I can?
