I use the nose plug one which is really effective in a dream. What you do is just plug your nose with your fingers and try and breathe through your nose. If you can breathe your dreaming, if not then you're awake.

I started biting my finger in lucid dreams to see if I felt pain.
Basically if I bite my finger and feel no pain or my teeth sink in or all the way through without it hurting I'm dreaming.
I suppose that's not a good one though for people just starting out.
Try levitating. I've heard that works great. Or someone else said they jump into the air and if they don't immediately land or if they float softly down they knew they were dreaming.

I use a memory reality check. If you can't remember what you've done for the past two hours or how you got to where you are now, then you're dreaming. It's useful because there is no physical action and you don't look like an idiot if you're awake.
