Not sure...
Occasionally I will wake up in the middle of the night. Usually my dreams are pleasant, so if I will try to remember what I was dreaming about. If I can remember, I fall asleep by kind of telling myself in my mind about what should happen next. It's kind of strange, but I'm never quite sure if I'm awake or dreaming after this stage. Is this a way to start lucid dreaming? By telling myself a story as I fall asleep should my dream continue this story?

This sounds somewhat similar to the MILD method.

It wouldn't quite be a lucid dream, because you wouldn't be aware that you are dreaming while the dream is going on. The dream would start going in some direction, then be beyond your control.

It sounds like a cross between MILD and DEILD.
By entering a dream, and recognizing what you thought about, it's way easier for you to LD. I mean.. think about it. The last thing you think is what your dream will be about, and then you dream about it. It's not hard from there to RC and have a LD.
