Concerned with WHAT lucid dreaming may actually be

Hello,

My first post, yay! Thanks for these forums. I feel pretty alone out here on this subject. I appreciate being around others that have the same gift/abilities.
I am not new to lucid dreaming. I have Steven Laberge's books, but have not read all of them, just parts.

My most immediate concern right now is exactly WHAT the dream state actually is, in truth. I believe, just as man cannot conceive of what God is, I don't believe he can conceive every aspect of his creation or implementation (this is not a religious rant, I swear). So, what are dreams? Am I being instantly transported to another dimension, where my soul is being run through testing scenarios by some higher entity who watches over my actions?

This is my belief, for now. I no longer buy into the medical establishment's claims of dreaming being induced by our brain. It's just "too" real. I hear loud and clear talk radio radio broadcasts & beautiful music, even when I have earplugs in. Perhaps our brain is simply a tool that is used to interact with the dream state, which is in another dimension.

I don't know these answers, or what the questions should even be. I am concerned though that there may be a higher purpose in play with dreams, and perhaps we should be mindful of what we're doing in the dream state.

Does what we do in the dream state, affect others, either on this planet, or perhaps in another dimension?

While I'd like to believe that dreams are more than just our imagination, the idea of affecting something in our dreams sounds scary. But if whatever higher being allows us to go into this new dimension, why would it let us have all this power of manipulating everything with our minds?

I guess we'll never find out. Welcome to the forums anyway! :)

Here's my "current" theory.

Most of the time, non-lucid dreamers go about their dreams unbeknownst to them. Their actions are essentially uninhibited, violence, rage, love, emotions, etc.

If you are a religious (or spiritual) person, and/or believe in being judged in some way (i.e. life review, judgment day), giving this "power" to immature souls that have not completed their life (education) on Earth, could be a way to judge growth & maturity of that soul. Will you use the power for good, or will you destroy everything around you?

I've become a bit more reserved of how my actions affect others around me in LDs. We may at one point in the future after death, have such powers of creation and control. This prospect is exciting.

I think lucid dreaming is just a different version of our normal, everyday consciousness. If there is a realm that is affected by our dreams, it would be affected by all of our thoughts and visualizations in our waking life.

I don't think the dream world is something beyond the activity in our brains, but even if it were, what you make of it is your choice. You don't have to do anything in the dream world that you wouldn't have done anywhere else.

This prospect is exciting yea, yet it is scary.
I think that what we do in our dreams- and then not counting the lucid ones; is a way of our brains to process what we do during the day, during the week, or even in the past few years. I read my dream journal often and find out that things that happen in those dreams, if you read between the lines, deals greatly with some aspects I deal with in my normal day life. Even though some dreams make absolutely NO sense at all. A DC is, in my opinion, a manifestation of ourselves in different moods; created by our subconscious, acting like how You would act in different situations, in different ways.
When dreaming normally my dreams are normally as follows: something happens, i don't know how to deal with it, and the answer shows up. In my dreams there is a LOT of dialogue also, except for my nightmares which normally don't have a single line of speaking.
My nightmares have one aspect in common: I am alone, or if there are people there, the situation depends on me.

The idea that a dream might mean more, and that we are affecting different dimensions, is something I can't relate myself into. I am not saying it is not true though, I simply don't know.

I have formed this belief after demanding (screaming) to know where I was, where is here, from another individual present in my lucid dream. I was told I was in another dimension, and my soul was being "tested".

Go ahead and ask the question yourself next time you see someone. They may have been there the entire time, waiting for you. Demand they tell you why you are there.

So you formed a belief around something one dream character said once, which you decided to assume was true? That's absurd. There are any number of things that could have been said; you're telling me that you'd have believed any thing that was said in response to your question? If you would believe anything, that's foolish. If you wouldn't believe anything, you're looking for the answer you want. ("You're inside your mind", "Rubbish, but that guy over there claimed I was in another dimension being tested; he must be right!")

Here is what dreaming is: a form of consciousness where the mind shuts off input from the rest of the body. Lucid dreaming is a way of having the mind consciously control this state. There is no magic dimension.

Again, foolish. You might as well enjoy the power you have now, because you won't get it again. But hey, if you want to hang back that's your loss, and entirely your decision.

This is just ignorance talking. You want to know why dreams seem so real? Because the same 'software' is running when we sleep as it is when we are awake. The entire world you see around you it a construct of your mind. Sure, there is actually a house over there, and a car parked on the street, but the colours, sounds, smells, are the brain constructing them based on electrochemical signals. Matter is 99.999...% empty. The illusion of solidity is created by our brains, which is why you see a wall, instead of empty space, and 99.999% empty space.

The only difference is that the inputs are coming from your memories and expectations.

And why does the sensation of sound amaze you so much? You see images in dreams, yet you don't seem to be waxing lyrical about how those are "too real".

Believe what you want, but I feel sorry for you; you reject medical evidence for no rational basis, and base your beliefs around the assumption that what a dream character told you (which by the sounds of it, is what you wanted to hear), was true. You have decided to ignore the scientific evidence for why dreams appear so real to be replaced by your own unsubstantiated explanation (same software, because nerve impulses are still sent out to muscles in the same way as when awake, because it uses the same models of reality, etc).

You won't get another chance to dream when you're dead, though you'll disagree with me on that front. But don't waste the chance to use this amazing ability here and now, when you know you can use it.

Additionally, it is somewhat worrying that you don't appear to be able to differentiate reality and dreams; you seem to equate dream happenings as being truthful at any rate (i.e. I was told I was in another dimension in my dream when I asked, so it MUST be true). People who can't differentiate fact from fiction also seem to be the kinds of people who immitate films, video games, or other art forms with drastic consequences.

I couldn't prove that dreams AREN'T some inter-dimensional travelling...but when we actually have a great body of science that says its much more rational that its just your brain, busy at work....I couldnt disbelieve it.

Dreams feel real? They should do....why wouldnt they?

Real life is like this.

Information from reality -> detected and interpretted by brain -> pereception of reality.

Dreams are like this

Information created by brain ---------> perception of Dream.

No stimulis/receptors. Infact, dreams can feel more 'real' than real-life

Just enjoy it, and dont look too much into it!

Welcome, to your subconscious.

Everything you do without thinking about doing, is done by your subconscious.

Dreaming also, is a process of your subconscious, probably takes place to pass the time, or maybe it's your head sorting memories and deleting non-interesting ones. In any case you experience non-real events, and you meet non-real people, who resemble other people exactly.

Lucid dreaming IS realisation, and therefore control of this subconscious process, allowing you to shape your dreams.

The dream state, is IN YOUR HEAD. Keep any other fantasies, within your dreams. Collective experiences of dreams are usually a co-incidence.
( Notice when you were still growing and you were learning words, the words you learnt started popping up frequently? it's because you previously ignored them or assumed their meaning to be insignificant. )

DejaVu, however is closely related to premonitions. You dream SO MUCH, that you infact talk to more people, and do more things in your dream than you do in your life. It is up to the individual however to remember these dreams. DejaVu could simply be the re-occurance of a dream, in real life. ( In some similarity. )

The other application of DejaVu would be the sarcastic form, which is not related, obviously.
