      Hello

I just found out about this site. I'll give you a little information to start off.

I'm 16, and don't really dream anymore. This is probably because I sleep with the TV on, since I feel more protected if I do.

I really want to start dreaming again.. tonight is the night where I just shut my TV off and try to sleep soundly. Should I get used to sleeping like this before trying lucid dreaming?

Honestly I can't wait for the night. This seems like a lot of fun and very relaxing.

      See you around.

Hello and welcome to Dream Views.

Sleeping with the TV might be distracting or it might help to set up the background for odd dreams (once you start recalling them) It's said that everyone dreams, most people don't recall them though. If you start a dream journal and jot down any fragment or feeling of a dream you have upon waking, you'll be training yourself to recall.

Good luck tonight. If you find it's hard to get to sleep without the TV on, why not try listening to music, softly in the background, instead. That's something that seems to help me sleep and dream better.

      Hello, and welcome to DV!

Although you don't remember it, you do dream every night, several times a night. Turning off the TV might help you remembering your dreams, but there are other things you can do.

You might want to read this quick start tutorial to lucid dreaming: http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ead.php?t=1518 Also, you will want to start working on increasing your dream recall before trying to lucid dream. It's kinda pointless to have a lucid dream when you can't remember it when you wake up...

Good luck with your progress, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

      Heya!

I know this is probably a bit of a random rush, but I just wanted to help you start again. I know how it feels to desperately want to do it again and not being able to do it. So, as follows, here are the basic things you can do, and I really think you should do them. Here we go:

Firstly, keep a Dream Journal? Do you keep a Dream Journal? If so, good. If not, you should! Dream Journals increase your dream recall, as well as making you look good, and being given the ability to share your dreams and to show others the inspiration to start what we do. Also, Dream Journaling by itself can make you lucid dream over time, so this is a must. There's more information if you need it, here - Click

Secondly, we come to Reality Checking. Have you ever been in a dream and gone thought to yourself that you may be dreaming? Well that's when you do a Reality Check. Basically, as you get a tiny bit more experienced, it may occur to you more that you're dreaming, when you're dreaming. This is why a Reality Check is really useful. To do it, when you ask yourself, look at your hands, do you notice anything strange about them, like something impossible? Then you know you're dreaming. You see, the brain cannot generate hands properly, this forces something to always be wrong with the hands, thus giving you the possibility to realize you're dreaming. To find out more, click here - Click

Similar to Reality Checking, we have Dream Signs. Have you noticed yet that there's mostly always something in your dream that always occurs? Well, this is your own personal Dream Sign. For example, I mostly dream about the school I used to go, sometimes the detail is really vivid. So it's something that happens in your dream mostly. This is where you fix your Reality Checking into it, say you always dreamt you were Santa Clause, you would do a Reality Check every time you see or hear Santa Clause, basically fixing it into your head that Santa Clause is your gateway to lucidity. Find out more about these funky little things here - Click (The Dream Signs are next to "Step 2")

That link I gave you on the paragraph above is actually quite useful, have a read, I recommend it. Anyway, another tip is to read about Lucid Dreaming a lot, this gets your mind used to talking about it, so then you could either fix up a Dream Sign to talking about it, or you'll just get lucid faster. But as I said, keeping a Dream Journal will help a lot.

I'm glad that you have a really good attitude towards this, I can already tell things are going to go well for you. If you follow these basic tips, you're going to have a wonderful and fun time here.

If you want to know where I got the tutorial links from, they're here - Click

The section has some quite nice tutorials on it, really nice. Some are a tiny bit advanced though, but you could try them and experiment to see what you find and easy and what you don't find easy.

And finally, welcome to the community! If you have any questions, feel free to post them here.

Thanks for the warm welcome =]

I'm wondering if sometimes I'm not tired enough to fall asleep most days. Usually I stay awake in bed for an hour or more just thinking or looking at the TV. Would more exercise help me? Running usually gets me tired, especially later in the day.

Depends when the exercise is my friend. If it's in the middle of the day, that's completely fine. But I don't recommend it within an hour of going to bed. And yes, I agree, it makes me very tired too does running, I remember when I was walking through a whole down throughout the day, it recked like mad. Slept really well though.

Yeah it's usually 2-3 hours before bed. I'm currently looking for a little notepad to jot down my dreams on. Can't find one right now..

I also smoke weed on a regular basis. Could smoking a bit before bed help lucid dreams or even just help me relax to start dreaming?

Don't know about smoking, sorry, but I've heard stuff like that hurts your recall. Don't know if that's just Marijuana though.. Other than that, I dunno.

But Dream Journals are an ace way to increase recall anyway.

Yeah I'm really excited to start this. If only I could find a pad to write on.

Oh.. and how do I know when each dream starts and stops? I know REM lasts only 10 mins. or so but I'm curious as to how I'll be able to remember each one separately.

It might not be so good for your Recall, and you don't want that. After all, what's a lucid dream if you can't remember it? I'm not in the position to affirm that statement though, since I've never used drugs, but a lot of people are saying it does your recall no good.

      / Stenny

      EDIT:
Rem does not last 10 mins. Maybe your first REM period does, but the more you sleep, the longer they last. After a couple hours of good sleep they may reach an hour or so.

Alright.. so maybe I wont smoke RIGHT before bed. Maybe a couple hours before.

Yeah the 10 minutes was a guess. I figured they got longer anyways.

Well, personally, I don't think I've ever remembered a dream start, but I do remember a dream ending believe it or not, I woke up straight after it. The princess was saved and the screen faded black. A second later, I woke up.

Anyway, the closest I've got to a dream starting was someone telling a story, and then a dream starting from that. But yeah, it's just natural though so don't worry about it.

Also, I used to think that exact question, how do I know when a dream separates. Well, the thing I self learnt is that by guessing, at first on my Dream Journal I started writing like giant paragraphs saying how it all faded out and started again completely different. After a while, I learnt that it was the dreams separating.

And about the Dream Journals, all you need is a piece of paper to write notes on. If you can't find a writing pad, I recommend clicking here. Start a Dream Journal in there if you want, just start a thread and it will be your own personal Dream Journal, if you want you can make another one each year, you can, that's what most people do anyway. Some people also separate their Lucid Journals from their None Lucid Journals.

If you need help on inspiration, click the link under my signature banner. That's my Dream Journal.

I've read your journal J, and it's really interesting.

Just wondering, would it take a while for me to get into lucid dreams since I haven't been really remembering mine? Should I get used to sleeping soundly before I start trying?

      Hey, welcome to Dream Views.

Just wanted to say, good luck tonight. Be sure to tell youself tonight right before you go to sleep, "I will remember each of my dreams, and write them down!" Show that subconscious who's boss.

And, tomorrow, be sure to let us know what dreams you end up having

Well, don't worry. Your skill will come back over time. It will help if you can remember your experiences, doesn't have to be your dreams necesserely, but what you did, how you did it, how you prepared. That kind of stuff would be useful to remember.

But even if you don't remember that, this site will sure help you bring you back to your skill, maybe improve it, who knows?

I think i can answer your questions.

      1. Avoid (or eliminate) caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, especially close to bedtime. Alcohol and nicotine may seem to induce shut-eye, but both cause disrupted snoozing later on in the night. Caffeine can stay in your system for up to 12 hours, keeping you awake long after you'd like.

2.Don’t watch TV or even so much as look at a computer screen at least 30 minutes before you lie down. The light from both a television as well as a computer monitor mimic the same intensity of light as sunlight. This fools your body and brain into thinking it’s nowhere near time for sleep.

3.Excercise during the day. I emphasize during the day. Excercising at night just gets everything going instead of shutting down for sleep. But excercising during the day tires the muscles out and makes for a solid nights sleep.

4.Reserve the bed for bed things (ie sleep and sex). I for one don’t strictly follow this rule as I’ll read some before I go to sleep, but for some people this is a must.

Welcome, I'm very new here too

      Hi, Burn One Down, welcome.

Throughout my life I've had very vivid dream recall, but I have had periods (and still do, sometimes) in which my recall was terrible. My mid to late teens were especially dry, perhaps because of the pressures and anxieties that go along with that period (i.e. I may have been supressing emotionally bad dreams). However, I won't make assumptions about your mental state, but the members of this site can offer you a lot of info and advice to help enhance your dreaming experience.

One thing that always seems to help me is to put a bit of effort during the day into thinking about dreams (old dreams, what dreaming means to me, and most importantly (in my experience) my preconcieved beliefs about what is possible in a dream. I've had so many occassions in which I'll think during the day about something I've never done in a dream, and then that night I'll dream about it. Also, it might help you to reinforce in your mind a certain "fearlessness" about your dreams; an evolving dreamscape (sorry to use such an esoteric term, but it works) can be a bit disturbing even when the content is benign.

Kino, I'm thinking a lot about my dreaming and really can't wait to sleep. I already know I'll dream tonight. I have a good feeling about it.

Oh man, doesn't that suck? I especially get like that after a night of vivid/lucid dreaming.

Oh, and Burn One Down, I think everyone's different when it comes to weed and dreaming, but I personally found that weed inhibited my dream recall, and I didn't have my first lucid until after I stopped at around age 20. You may want to lay off the herb for a week or so and see what happens. I've read that some people actually go BACK to the pot to STOP the dreams, same with nicotine withdrawal.

Also, hydration is important for optimal brain function, and that inlcudes memory. Pot and alcohol, both known to affect memory, dream recall, and REM, also both dehydrate a person. I'm not claiming any medical expertise, but I think its pretty safe from a holistic point of view to see a connection there.
