You can WILD when you are going to bed you dont have to do a WBTB but it does help.
Very few people are able to enter REM sleep right away when going to bed for the night. Generally REM is necessary for a succesful WILD, as REM is the stage of sleep where most dreams occur.
So, if you want to WILD and are just going to bed for the night there is very little chance that you will immediatly enter REM (and the dream state necessary for WILD). So, if you are trying to WILD at night it is recomended that you sleep for a while (3-5 hours), wake up, and then try to WILD. You can do a WBTB (get out of bed, do something, then go back to bed) if you want. Many people can't WILD without doing a WBTB, but I never have had to.
However, if you want to try to WILD during a nap in the middle of the day there is a decent chance that you will hit REM quickly, and can WILD without sleeping for a while and then trying it.
Hope this makes it clear!
