Cursed with DILDs
I just don't get it. I get DILDs somewhat often, enough to keep me interested in LD'ing, but whenever I try a technique, like VILD or FILD, I find it impossible to fall asleep while doing whatever is required. After going through so much difficulty I started reading up on how to improve DILDs, but that doesn't seem to work much, either. And to top it off, whenever I do have a DILD it barely lasts. Every time I become lucid, I find that I have amazing control over dream powers (Levitating, Teleportation, Shrinking, Stopping Objects, Making people speak gibberish) but I only get about what feels like thirty seconds of lucidity before I wake up or get lost in the dream again.
Any advice on how to make other techniques work or to improve my DILDs?

I have the same sort of problem. But, when i try a technique(WILD is the most common I have tried) it doesn't work. The only way I have gotten lucid, is just by realizing i'm dreaming. And the part about "ditto" was, whenever i become lucid, i wake up about 30 seconds later. I usually then look at the clock, then try to fall asleep again. But when i fall asleep, i am in a completely seperate dream. On 1 occasion, i noticed i was dreaming, and right away, tried to do something. I tried flying, and i was soaring through the clouds for maybe 20 seconds, then i started falling through the sky, and then woke up.

I am a "natural" LDer, and have had hundereds (maybe thousands) of DILDs in my life, so I can speak from experience.
The subconscious is VERY suggestible. It is possible that you expect your LDs to be really short, so they are. This will happen especially if you have some kind of emotional reaction to them being short. You may want to try some positive thinking to counteract any unintentional info you are feeding to your subconscious. I suggest thinking something like "I have long lucid dreams." And while thinking it imagine what a long LD would feel like. Get excited about it, just like you would if it was really happening! Doing this often (especially before bed) might help a lot.
Another technique you might want to try is DEILD. It is similar to a WILD, but many people who struggle with WILD find DEILD much easier.

DILDs aren't bad, and it is possible to have more of them. Almost all of my lucid dreams have been DILDs and I'm not a natural.

what i do that works everytime is say out loud or in your dream head, "i am dreaming" or "this is my dream" over and over but don't randomly mumble it, actually take note of what you are saying... keep it in the back of your head while you do everything and then you will not go from lucid to back to a normal dream. i usually begin doing this as soon as i enter the dream to prevent my unpredictable self from losing my lucidity
