I am having issues with being awakened by muscle jerks. They usually happen while I am just starting to fall into a good sleep. It is like a sudden twitch, only much bigger and more violent. Why are they happening and do they affect my dreaming?

It has happened to me before, it normally does when I'm worried about something, so I think its an anxiety thing. But it could be anything.. maybe its a lack of potassium , try eating some bananas :)
Thats a bit of a stab in the dark lol!! :D
To give a decent answer though, you need to be fairly detailed in your question... You should ask yourself questions like this:
-Does this sort of thing happen when your awake, like a nervous twitch?
-Are you dreaming when this happens (for example, i had a dream a few nights ago of getting an electric shock on the leg and woke up with my leg muscles contracting and twitching. It was quite painful actually!)?
-How often does it happen?
-Do you have any dream recall when your woken up by it?
-Is it your whole body that twitches?
-Are you woken up suddenly?
Sorry for being rather blunt.. :)
Does it happen due to a dream. I've given my girlfriends pretty bad bruises if I've dreamed I was playing soccer or sparring or something and suddenly wake up. If you come out of SP and your dreaming that you're kicking, you will kick.
If it happens randomly then it's probably the way that you are sleeping. Your body is uncomfortable, so it jerks to try and get into a better position.
Sounds like a Hypnic Jerk to me. Mine aren't violent, but I feel it all through my body.
Lot of people are having these, becouse they arent relaxed. This is often the way, how body relaxes the muscles. You may try some stretching before going to bed if you want.
:D
