I don't think it lessens your ability to have lucid dreams any less; you can just get right back into it, after all! You might be a little rusty, but that changes. I don't think taking breaks from dreaming hurts...Maybe it even helps. It can definately build back up your enthusiasm and remind you why you might love dreaming! :D
I think (not completely sure) that if you DEILD and then set an alarm to wake yourself up a little before your REM period ends, you should have no trouble at all. The DEILD will work every time, so long as you do it right. Oh yeah, you should make sure to wake yourself up for the DEILD during a REM period. A great DEILD tutorial can be found here:

I occasionally have stretches where I forget to write anything down. It limits my lucid ability, but not completely. Then again I'm fairly experienced.
You definetly have. REM sleep, or Rapid Eye Movement, is when you dream. As you know, you dream many times a night.
You don't have to write down your dreams in order to have a lucid dream, when I first started having LD's I never once kept a dream journal or written anything down. I just kept going over the dreams in my head and trying to recognize my dream signs. If your memory is good enough, you can keep a dream journal inside your head instead.
But of course writing them down gives you a must better chance at having more, because you do tend to forget dreams later on, though you may always remember your most common dream signs.
If you don't have REM every single night of your life, there is something wrong with you and you need to see a brain surgeon.
Not ruin, but greatly decrease. Every time I start to neglect journaling my nonLDs I notice a huge decline in my LDs.
Definitely never think you can just remember your nonLDs in your head without any sort of physical recording, you are guaranteed to forget a lot.
I still try to keep them all in my memory too, but when I review my past dreams many of them I would have never remembered without the log. I imagine the majority of people experience the same thing.
Well, you might not get a LD as fast as you couldve had you been recording your dreams daily, but there's no rush, its not a race. If you just pick up from where you left off and start recording your dreams daily, then you will be right back on track!:)
