Reckon i could get the hang of this...

Hi im new here

Just joined because the other night i had a long series of dreams and in one of them something alerted me to how unrealistic it was. In fact it was my ideal scenario for something and i think i was trying to control what was happening before i woke up.

I have known i am dreaming during a dream loads of times before. My friend told me an anecdote when we were really young when during one of his dreams someone told him he was only dreaming and he thought "yeah, of course" before waking up. I wasnt sure about it but it must have cued me to do this sometime later. I wasn't aware how much i could control it though, i think i just marvel at the dream itself rather than taking the bull by the horns. The other night though, i wish that could have carried on, it felt amazing.

So i'll stick around looking for tips and sharing stories if i can get any more interesting nights sleep.

You're lucky to have a lucid dream happen naturally like that. Do you remember doing anything different that would have brought about a night of vivid dreams?

I'm with you on letting the dream progress naturally. I rarely try to exert too much control. I think it is much more interesting to work with the wackiness the dream provides.

I never considered it to be a rare talent at all, I thought most people probably do this at some point, but waking up is so hard to avoid and its the most disappointing thing ever! So I'm interested in stopping myself from waking up but I dont know how much control I can exert over the dream.

Hmmmm it wasnt a normal nights sleep, I had a few drinks beforehand and watched a fairly messed up film, in bed with my friend. She fell asleep and I took at least an hour or two to settle down but i was content listening to music. I think I drifted off, at some point woke and turned the music off because it was bothering me and I thought I'd get a bad nights sleep. It must have been after that, I read about the wiki on this, I think it said something that made sense to me about waking at some point, then going back to sleep. Perhaps something to do with activating your mind for a brief period interrupting your sleep? I'm fairly confident in thinking that makes you dream more. And dreams normally happen towards the end of you sleep, is that right?

It was also during an offbeat version of one of those dreams where you wake up in your room. I always get those but they arent lucid. I seemed to teleport to a bedroom and the person next to me was someone I know on the other side of the world. Thats what made me click at the time. It was a new combination to me anyway, despite being the 3 common factors i can think of in my dreams

Anyway I shall follow your advice. In truth I'm a terrible sleeper - I got onto the topic after discovering and reading about Circadin rhythm sleep disorder, and remembering what happened a few nights ago. So I'll probably stick around!

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea, already of what triggered your lucidity. Pretty much everything you mentioned can be used to go lucid.

It also sounds like you had a false awakeing, as people call it around here. Where you dream you wake up, but you are really still asleep. I get these all the time after having a lucid dream. Especially one where I try to wake myself up, or think of waking myself up for whatever reason. It makes sense, right? If your thoughts and beliefs control your dream, why wouldn't the dream respond when you think of waking up?

If you get these often, try getting in the habit of performing Reality Checks every time you wake up.

Yeah, reality checks when you wake up are a good idea. When starting out I remember having tons of false awakenings, and I still have them quiet frequently actually :? I need to start doing that again.
