Is this a dream...or is this reality?

Before I go to sleep I say "I will remember my dreams" or "I will have a lucid dream" etc.

Oh man, this is going to be hard to explain OK, lets see:

I can't tell if I'm sleeping or not (like...am I lying in my bed conscious or am i dreaming that I am lying in my bed conscious). So if I have a dream and then I wake up in the morning, I cant tell if it was a dream or was I "daydreaming" at night consciously...thus I can't decide whether or not to write the experience in my dream journal...all because I cant tell if it was a dream or not.

(real dream) -- ok I had a dream about a war in Italy and It felt pretty real and I think I had a lucid dream for a split second but then I told myself I'm not dreaming and then I went to sleep and then I woke up and then I went to sleep and then I woke up......crazy right!?

So are there any tips for me when I wake up on how to tell if it was a dream at night or not?...this is my fifth day with a dream journal and this morning I decided not to write anything in it since i cant distinguish reality.

I really hope you understood that and took the time to read this ridiculously long and confusing post because right now I feel like my mind is trying to F#%k with me

Pinch your nose.. can you breathe?

Look at a clock .. then look at it again. Did the time change? Can you even see what it says?

These are a few I use Always do it when you "wake up" as false awakenings are very common

Reality checks such as these are exactly what you're looking for. If you tend to be unsure as to whether or not your dreaming, try what hellohihello suggested. There's also a Reality Check tutorial that you can check out which has a lot more ideas.

Overall, RCing is more about questioning your state of mind than performing an act. Asking the question "Am I dreaming?" may get you a yes or no answer, but you could just think that you're still awake. Ask yourself questions that question if what's going on makes sense. "What am I doing?" "How did I get here?" "Does this make sense?" If you can't answer those or the answer doesn't seem to be logical, it's a good chance you're dreaming. A number of people become lucid during false awakenings, so it's a good idea to get into the habit of RCing when you wake up.

If any of this doesn't make sence or you have further questions, let us know.

thats really weird but i think that you will know it if u are dreaming, like if u lay on your bed at night and then when you wake up you remember that you were in a war in a far place! well that cannot be a real thing , and if you remember your dreams pretty good , you will know that you are dreaming from a few things like if you changed your place suddenly or the time has changed suddenly in your dream, if you were in another place that you slept in ....etc. i dnt know sth like that..

Not always. It's one thing to dream of a great battle and wake up, but another to dream of walking around your house and waking up. I've had at least one false awakening where I wrote the previous dream down in my DJ and went back to sleep, only to find out that I'd dreamed writing it down and had nothing about the previous dream written down. That's why I suggest developing the habit of reality checking whenever you wake up.

There have been a few times where I'll remember some small memory and I have to stop to think "Did that actually happen or did I just dream that?" It's usually nothing important, but it happens.

Oh...duh I have no idea why this didn't occur to me before. I think the problem is that when I think im awake and then it turns out that I'm actually awake, I will fall asleep again really fast, or my mind will be so tired that I'll forget to do a dream check. Nevertheless, I need to get back into my sleep schedule, maybe that will help with distinguishing dreams from reality also?

You really get fooled when you WILD?

That never happens to me, since I know I'm going into a dream.

Having a set sleep schedule will help. You wake up several times throughout the night naturally, and with regular sleep hours, you'll be able to figure out at what times that takes place.

So, when I wake up several times through the night is that after the Dream or Rem cycle is over, so then I can set my alarm clock 20-30 minutes earlier to wake me up during a rem, helping me to remember my dream???

You guys have been a ton of help, thanks!

Start with 10-20 minutes before you usually wake up and you should wake up while you're dreaming, making it easier to recall. You may have to experiment with what times to set your alarm clock, so if you find waking at one time doesn't work, adjust your alarm 10-20 minutes.
