Dream Signs are tools. It's pretty much a more specific form of reality checking in where when you see a certain person/place/thing/event, you question whether or not you're dreaming. If you find yourself in your bedroom a lot in your dreams, then when you're in your bedroom in real life, ask yourself if you're dreaming. The goal is to get into the habit of automatically asking yourself if you're dreaming when you see or experience a DS.
In the grand scheme of things, reality checking is more about questioning what is going on around you. If you flippantly ask "Am I dreaming?" once in a while, it's less likely to make any impact on state of mind. If you stop what you're doing, look around, and ask yourself if what is going on around you makes sense, you will be far more likely to catch when you're dreaming. Ask questions such as "Where am I?" "What am I doing?" "How did I get here?" and "Does this make sense?" If you can get in the habit of constantly asking those kinds of questions while awake, it will filter over into your dreams and you'll find yourself lucid more often.
Dream Signs are useful, don't get me wrong. If you have specific signs that show up regularly, use them! "When I see myself with black hair, I will know that I'm dreaming." When you're awake and look in the mirror, really take a close look at yourself. Do you appear out of the ordinary? If so, you're probably dreaming.
Keep writing your dreams down. You might be surprised to find what comes up
