I hope someone takes time to help...

OK, this is weird...well WAS weird.
I've been having loads of trouble sleeping. I usually fall asleep relatively easily but can only sleep for 4 or 5 hours at a time anymore. Just for the record, in case it matters, I'm a 36 year old male.
Last night I dug through the medicine cabinet and took one of my wifes sleeping pills. Just the kind you go buy at walmart, nothing special. I went and laid down to go to sleep, put my ipod on to relax (as I often do) and got comfortable. Next thing I know, I'm "feeling" myself fall asleep... which felt more like I was waking up in a new place, with an african american lady (who wasn't what I would call "hot") and making out with her while standing up in a white room that I didn't recognise. While kissing her, I realized that I could "feel" her next to me and her lips against my own, but I also felt as though I was pushing my tongue against my own closed mouth from the inside. The entire experience couldn't have lasted more than 60 seconds but left me feeling quite confused. I can remember it as clearly as I would if it had really happened. I am the kind of person who NEVER remembers my dreams. What happened? I started googleing this morning to try and find out if it is normal to do this or if I have something wrong with me and ran across this site. I've seen Vanilla Sky before but thought it was just a load of BS with no connection to reallity. Did I have a lucid dream? Can I learn to do this anytime I want? The possibilities seem endless if this is for real. Someone please help me understand what happened. Thanks in advance...

Seems to me that you may have just fell asleep really quickly and comfortably? I am not sure because I would need more information on how exactly you could "Feel" yourself falling asleep.. I took that line in a literal sense, but if it means more, please explain :)... That dream was quite interesting.. I myself have seen Vanilla Sky before and love the movie..

As far as Lucid Dreaming, you can teach yourself to have them at will. It takes time, patience, and practice.. There are many people on this forum and in this community that can offer you great help if that is what you are looking for.. I myself, am a little stumped on the part where you just slipped into a dream.. I would want to say maybe it was an accidental WILD sense you said you could still feel your actual body while you were dreaming, but I think someone with more of a WILD background can clarify that for you...

If you realized you were dreaming while inside that dream, then it was a Lucid Dream.. if you didn't stop and realize it, then it was just a normal/bizarre dream you had.. I will pass this on to a few people that I know that are really knowledgeable and that can probably offer some more in depth help--which I know you are looking for.. so just keep checking back under this and hopefully we can get you answers!

I've had similar experiences to the one you are describing. Where you can feel your real body and your dream body both at the same time. It is weird.

It sounds like you had an unintentional Wake Initiated Lucid Dream (WILD). With some practice, you can learn to do this whenever you want. The general idea is, you wake after a few hours of sleep, so you are close to a long dream or REM cycle. Then, you lie down and watch yourself fall asleep, like you described. You keep a small part of your mind conscious while you let yourself fall asleep and enter a dream. Check out some of our WILD tutorials here:

Anytime people talk about having a "WILD," they are essentially talking about the same thing that happened to you. Read around a bit to get an idea of what they can be like. I have a ton recorded in my dream journal. You also might want to check through the Dream Journal section of the site to read other peoples' similar experiences.

Everything requires your attention to exist.

The reason you don't usually remember your dreams is simply because you don't try to remember and don't pay them any attention.

In this case, you were focused on sleep through that sleeping pill you took, which allowed you to remember that dream.

If I understand what you wrote correctly, that dream started as soon as you fell asleep? If that's the case, you should be able to pinpoint the source of that woman you were making out with. Dreams reflect what you have your attention focused on, so perhaps one of the songs on your Ipod influenced that dream.

Didn't sound like a lucid to me though.

Welcome. It is lucid if you know you are dreaming, not if you suddenly realise you are dreaming. You can know you are dreaming from the start.

OK, I'll try and clarify a few points. 1st off, I knew I was dreaming as soon as I started. As I was drifting to the dream I knew it...it felt like an uncontrolled fantasy to some extent. Like I was conciously fantasizing about this unknown woman....yet was in control in this new "dream" environment. I did what I wanted as far as touching and kissing her....I just don't know what part of me wanted to and that is a little disturbing. I was fully aware I was dreaming and as I started to open my eyes I wished I hadn't...does that make any sense? I tried again last night without success. Kinda sucked not being able to actually. I took the sleeping pill, put on the ipod, .....got nothing. Big ole goose egg. Maybe I'll try again tonight.

I've never felt anything this real that wasn't real. I remember dreams on only at random and only in pieces usually. Also, in the dreams i do remember I always feel as though I'm watching whats going on without any actuall control. This one.....damn. I done exactly what I wanted, when I wanted too. Like I was inhabiting another "me".
I'm not one to believe in sci fi hocus pocus. In fact, if I'd run across this forum while surfing, with no connecting experience, I would have thought. "what a bunch of wackos" lol. That's part of what has me feeling confused.
This one went far beyond a simple dream. I wish I could do this again...the possibilities seem endless.

You definitely can do it again. Did you have a chance to read through some of the WILD tutorials? I'm sure they will resonate with what you experienced. You may be able to mix some of the typical advice with what you know worked for your particular experience. Come up with a system that is tailored to what you already know works for you.

I would agree that this sounds like an accidental WILD.

I would suggest reading through the basic information on lucid dreaming to get you started. It is very likely that you dream every night but just don't remember them. Grab yourself a book and start writing down your dreams as soon as you wake up. Because if you do it after breakfast or this or that, you will forget it. In no time you will be remembering more and more dreams, just as vivid as this one.

I want to give a note of caution with WILDing; the technique requires you to remain conscious as you are falling asleep and if you are suffering with insomnia, this may make it a lot harder for you to fall asleep. I have found this myself when i had bad insomnia.

I would suggest to stop using sleeping pills, they don't make for quality sleep. If you are having trouble getting to sleep, try to hold very still. For a while you will be comfortable and then you will get uncomfortable and it will be an instinct for you to move. Don't move! It's just your brain playing a trick on you, seeing if your body is still awake. Hold very still and soon that discomfort will disappear and you will slip off to sleep.

You can still lucid dream of cause, but I would suggest looking into Dream Initiated Lucid Dream (DILD). This is usually much much easier and will help ensure you aren't making your insomnia worse.

If you learn to lucid dream, or even to remember your dreams it might give you an insight as to what is causing you to have insomnia. Dreams, lucid or not, are infinately educational and enlightening. You could understand what is causing you this discomfort and have sex with your fantasy lady all in one night :D

Thanks everyone for taking an interest in my dilemma. I have not had time to read through the WILD tutorials but I have a couple of days off and hopefully I can read tomorrow. I'm just sooooo tired right now. I would never want to be anything other than a nurse.....but sometimes the unit can be so stressful. To many q 15 Vitals and Levophed drips today! I'm beat....

Well.....it's been almost a month since my 1st lucid.....still not able to do it again. This is frustrating....

Just keep writing down your dreams as soon as you wake up. And keep up reality checks everyday. You'll probably have a lucid dream as soon as you stop thinking about it :)

Remember not to underestimate what you can learn about yourself from normal dreams too.
